I was very disappointed. Just got this message from a Red rep.

"We no longer offer upgrades from the RED ONE to an EPIC, if you purchase a RED ONE Camera now, if you want an EPIC when it is available, you will have to purchase that separately as a new camera."

Can anyone verify?

I'm afraid to confirm it's correct. The option to upgrade from RED1 to EPIC ended quite some time ago, maybe as much as 18 months back.

If you were a RED ONE owner when the upgrade path was available, you would have known this with plenty of advance notice. So, for someone without a RED ONE, what is the downside? It is true that to own an Epic you will have to wait awhile. But you can decide whether it makes sense to buy a RED ONE today or wait for an Epic later. If you can be productive with the ONE right away, you might be able to justify the immediate ownership and perhaps sell it, or use it as a B camera, after buying an Epic. Life is full of great options! :thumbup1:

Buy a used red that hasn't been executed. Buy someone's Stage 2 Epic. Wait until summer and get your own Epic.

I think Red has given more than enough options. One thing I've noticed, though, is that no matter what they offer compared to other companies it never seems to be enough for some...

I appreciate the suggestions.

Unfortunately I have an upcoming project in Tibet in May. Waiting till summer is not an option. What's the market like for a Stage 2 Epic? I can't imagine anyone is willing to sell it.

Sounds like it might be worth going for a new (or used) RED ONE MX. You'll get an awful lot of what you are probably looking for! :001_smile:

Stage 2 Epics have come up for sale, but they aren't cheap. There's also no guarantee that Red will ship the Epic in time.

My recommendation would be to rent either a low serial number epic at a premium, or shoot with the a Red One MX. It's still an amazing camera.
