  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

No more 18mm RED Prime?

Did anyone else notice in the announcement today that they dropped the 18mm prime for the 35mm set? That makes me really sad because 25mm just isn't wide enough for some of the work I do.

Matthew

Matthew, may have skip through. Where is this particular announcement? Lim

when they announced the red primes, Jim said the 18mm would come in the second wave of primes.

Well, there's always Nikon! :bleh:

Not to hijack the thread or anything, but I hope that we'll be able to modify those Nikon mounts for DX and G lenses because as you step up to the full frame options, the DX option goes away and you'll have to use full frame lenses. If that's really the case, then for wide angle stuff you'll need the 14-24mm 2.8 AFS or you'll have to settle for just the 14mm 2.8 prime and 17-35mm 2.8 zoom simply for the manual control.

What would be amazing is if RED made a wide angle zoom that went from the range of 10mm-20mm or even 11-20mm. As far as I know, nobody has done that before, save for the DX-size Tokina 11-16 zoom for Nikon and Canon. But if RED made a PL cinema lens like that, then the whole wide angle spectrum would be covered for just about any purpose, save for the occasional 8mm fisheye shot.

This is not good at all particularly of shooting 3k or 2 k on Red one.

Stopping at 25mm makes me wonder where the lenses are really coming from. Going to wait to see what Illumina comes out with. At 1.2 that holds some promise.

I'd be shocked if the 18mm has been dropped. Perhaps development is taking a different direction and actual focal length of some of the wider primes are not nailed down. Originally it was supposed to come in a "second wave". Anyway, I hope we get a 16 or 18 along with a few wider ones. I'd love a rectilinear 8mm...

Anyway, if the new 300mm Pro lens from RED is any indication of the new primes, then I'm all-in for the full set.

Where did you see this announcement?

Look at the brochure.

The 18mm was slow. Seems Red's going to let people source a faster one from elsewhere. That was always going to be my choice.
Zeiss and Cooke will have to step up production of the 18mm Ultraprimes and S4s.

edit...why are we reviving a 6 month old thread?

ok, jarred solved the mistery, but just in general I wouldn't rely on the online brochure anyway. the "pick a lens.... or ten" isn't up to date: the RPPs are all t1.8 and not 1.9 up to the 100mm. So don't be lookin' for news there, mate. At least not at the moment ... correct me if I'm mistaken.
