I'm finishing up editing a feature shot in 4k on the Red. I was brought on after 95% of the editing was done and I've never worked with Red before. Also no one else on the project is knowledgeable so here I am.
My immediate problem is exporting a few clips for CGI. All the footage & the timeline are 512 x 1024 prores, obviously a lower res referencing system. How do I export to get full raster 4k?

As far as I understand it depends on your hardware/software configuration which would dictate your way forward. And quite important where the finished product will be viewed. If you're going for cinema release you'll probably need some cash to do it properly. If you don't have any cash go for a 2k prores log and transfer in FCP. The results are fair enough.

download redalert ot redcine, talk with the vfx guys which colorspace they prefer, load in the few clips they need for cgi, then trim the few clips manually and expoprt to the format the guys need from you

cost you nothing

Hey Lucas - there are a couple "how to videos" (for free) that are linked somewhere on this site and my suggestion is to find those and watch them - they're really helpful in understanding the overall flow. Since you don't know how the footage was captured, you may have to do a little detective work. You might think of it like a film editing gig in worst case scenario where you'll have to make a cut list. You can use Red Alert to open clips and export them as dpx or tiff files for your visfx people.

What has the film been edited on? If it's FCP, download the RED FCS installer, and you will find the RED FCP Whitepaper. It will explain how to re-link the media to native R3Ds - but you will probably need to use something like Clipfinder to deal with this.

I would suggest that if you have an actual feature film to finish, you seek professional support. Without knowing everything about the organisation and storage of the 4K media, you are on a hiding to nothing...
