So I was testing out those cine rokinon lenses and - let me stop here to say, for the price I found them to be nice - about a week later I tossed on my Canon 50mm f1.2 and there was no way to control the aperture. It was stuck wide open.

I was going out on a nice sunny day, just walking around, capturing - what would be - stock footage to just build up my bank. So, it's not like a job was ruined or anything. LUCKILY. Also, if it had been a paying job, I would've fired up the Scarlet before going out.

So I am a firmware behind on builds so I can update the firmware and see if that fixes the issue, but I was curious if you guys have every heard of this and/or know of a solution?

FYI: I was out in a park before firing up the camera so on a very sunny day I shot at, what I presume, was 1.2; my iso was as low as it could go and my shutter speed was ridiculously high. It was sort of fun shooting, pain in the butt to keep anything in focus.

Let me know your thoughts.

Zak

Read again, the Rokinons certainly are but I'm not sure the canon lens he's actually having issues with is.

Ah - right. Not enough coffee yet.

I'd make sure the lens was seated correctly and the collar was tightened firmly. Maybe one of the pins in the mount was stuck?

I assume setting was for one of the autofocus modes?

I have the same problem with more than one lens. I work around it by turning the lens the last little bit (where the contacts engage) very slowly and I stop when the aperture information displays and is changeable. This is generally a hair's-width before the lens might normally stop on it's own. I'd like to stop having to do this workaround so if anyone learns of a fix I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks for the quick replies. I purposely didn't write this thread before my first cup of coffe or it would've just been keyboard mashings.

I'll try the mechanical solution of gingerly securing the lens before updating the firmware. Hopefully, that does the trick. I wasn't aware the mount was that temperamental.

In my experience, the mount really shouldn't be that temperamental. I have a had just a couple of quirks in many, many lens changes. The only thing that seemed like it could have been an issue was with a heavy lens and forgetting to firmly secure the collar.

I would have been thrilled if one of these had fixed it for me! :)

Turn off, turn on, turn off, turn on...
Change your lens
Do the black shading...
I have meet this problem one time and it's misteriously gone after some hours...

Weird, tried and changed lots of lenses, never had any issues with aperture controls or the mount.
By the way, the scarlet is the most stable camera I've ever owned.
Guess I'm just lucky.

Yeah, I secured the collar. I am very methodical on that front.

I put the canon lens back on after a day or so and it still had no controls - so unfortunately no luck with the "mysteriously gone after some hours" . But the list of things to try is growing. I will attempt each until I have a working aperture.

clicked reply and didn't post so if there are two posts that are similar - i apologize.

I tried firing it up with the Canon a day or so after I first had this issue and it still wasn't working, so unfortunately the "mysteriously gone after a few hours" is not to be.

But the list of things to try is growing, so I will go through them all until I have a functional aperture.

Does the lens move to the min/max focal distance when you connect the lens with the AF/MF switched to AF?
Does the screen report the focal length?
Do you have a different Canon lens that you could try?

1. i didn't notice I'll check tonight
2. " "
3. I do now and will try it tonight.

I have had this happen to me 2 or 3 timeson a beta build. 4 Something. It happened with a canon 70-200 F2.8 and a 24-105. It just suddenly locked in wide open.
A restart fixed it every time. Haven't happened on the latest firmware though

Try reflashing the firmware to the latest "release" build.

Also, try cleaning all the contacts on both the canon lenses as well as the RED Mount. Just wipe them down with a lens cleaning cloth..there may be some residual grease that may be the cause of your problems.

Chris that did the trick. I ended up tossing my Canon 100mm f2.8 on there and the aperture controls worked. So I took some wipes and cleaned the contacts on the 50mm. Now the aperture works. Lesson learned. I keep these guys clean but they still need a good tune up every once and a while. Thanks guys, glad to have my 50mm back in action.

Glad to hear it worked! :-)
