  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I'm just wondering, I noticed the the scarlet s35 doesn't have 120fps at any res, where as the 2/3 scarlet does, just wondering if that is correct?

Anyone know?

The latest we have heard from RED is that all Scarlets except for the 2/3" versions max out at 72fps.

Jim has stated that FPS is what costs money with the current state of technology. The much higher priced EPICs go up to 350fps. The S35 and 617 EPICa go to 250fps.

Cool, thanks for the info, Epic it is then.

Yeah sensors that small (S35 & 2/3" especially but even 35mm) are pretty cheap these days. Higher-end point-and-shoot digicams in the $500-$600 range often have 1/2" - 2/3" sensors, digital SLRs as cheap as $700-$900 have APS-C (around the same amount of real estate, albiet in a different shape, compared to S35) sized sensors, and there are DSLRs with 35mm sensors as cheap as $2500.

What makes these cameras expensive (besides higher margins due to lower volume) is the processing components (ADCs) to move the large amounts of data required by RAW video around in a timely manner.

Personally I have zero need for any speed over 30fps so what I wish for is a "prosumer" line below the "Scarlet" line. Identical line-up : 3K 2/3", 5K S35, 6K FF35 - except they top out at 30fps (still RAW though). I bet a 30fps FF35 would be cheaper to build than the 120fps 2/3" Scarlet!

And if they REALLY wanted to penetrate the prosumer market, they should remove the kid 2/3" body with the fixed lens from the grown-up Scarlet line and slot it even lower than the aforementioned "prosumer" line - down to 30fps again, but shoots at a much lower bitrate (but still a zillion times less compressed than the Sony and Canon camcorders it could be price-competitive with).

And although the sensors aren't the most expensive component of the Scarlet or Epic lines, spreading the development cost of their sensors to a far higher-volume line would likely allow them to be less expensive.

Personally I have zero need for any speed over 30fps so ...

Yeah. You. Realised? You, not everyone. Damn. Choose one that suits you, there are more than enough Cams to choose from. Me for instance wants a fixed 2/3". With this fps. If you want a cheap cam buy a sanyo (so avoid saying Sony and canon over and over again.)

Sorry if this sounds rough, but lets face facts. This cams are asscheap compared to the competition and you have a lot of various modes to choose from. For me that are way to many. Fixed, s35 Scarlet and ff35 Epic would be enough imho. But I understand that there are people unlike me that need or want another cam from the eight bodies.

And to come back on topic. As bigger the Sensor the more power you need to get fps out of it. So 2/3" has a not so big Sensor which means fairly aesy to have more frames per sec. The S35 has a bigger sensore that needs more power. And that's what the difference between Epic and Scarlet is. More Power to read from the Sensor.

me agrees w/ 2 in general but.. please don't say to the supplier again and again this or that is cheap.. 1st off.. when there's a eur1800 35mm camera out there.. 2ndly when there's no santa claus no matter where you go :greedy:

I need any speed over 30fps for sure!!!

I think that Jim want to deliver to us maximum possibilites in certain price range he is able to deliver - like win/win principle. No usual marketing annoying bullshit which you can see everywhere around. Therefore I recommend not to speculate about RED products and marketing strategy same way as you are used to.
