Will Adobe, Avid and others have to wait for the RED SDK to provide native .r3d support or can they do that without waiting?

Nick

Developers must wait for the SDK. Some developers have products already waiting to integrate the SDK, so I'd guess they'll hit market fairly quickly once that is released. I'll bet there are a ton of editors out there waiting for Avid to release a Red loving version!

When Red releases a PC version of the Qt .r3d component then it will be possible to offline in Premiere CS3 using the camera generated proxies (it's already possible to do that on the Mac).

cheers,

JT

Keep in mind- native r3d editing (and that includes the use of "proxies") will almost certainly be limited to "hard cuts-only" offline editing - even after the SDK is released.

Plan on a continued requirement for processing your camera clips before you can use them with any creative flexibility in post.

Of course, with the SDK available, the options for this will be plentiful.

This was going to be one of my questions in case anyone familiar with image/video processing and the likes might know. Not being familiar with video processing myself, is there any particular reason for your guess that the integration to be cuts only?
