  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Nikon Timelapse

The Nikons are nice little lenses that are a cheap way to get great shots. You just need to put in some extra work to make the footage look good while your shooting. So in my eyes I think cinema lenses you don't have to work as hard as the still lenses because they're more designed for motion work.

That's kind of a curious statement. How would you have shot differently if working with cinema lenses? What extra work did you have to do in order to make this footage look as good as footage shot with cinema lenses?

By the way, I think your footage has finally convinced me that I have to buy this camera.

Well from what I've experienced working with the Red lens that I own and the Nikons I have, I've seen that the focus can be more precise with the Red lens. The Nikons are just as sharp if not sharper in some respects. But you can easily go past the point of focus with the Nikons. Maybe its because they are just smaller lenses which I'm sure has something to do with it. You just have a longer way to go on the larger cinema style lenses to get from one end of focus to the other. I'm am by no means an expert on lenses. Its just what I've noticed.

Thanks guys for the compliments. For the most part the footage is very sharp. The only thing that's a little soft are the first two water shots and that's all my fault...not because it was shot in 2K.

I'm not sure what to think about this. As long as you or your company isn't implying that these shots were created by you or your company I don't see a problem with it.

Nope, I'll very obviously and in no uncertain terms tell our visitors where it came from, who shot it, and provide a direct link to your website. I'll send you a PM to check it out, and if you don't like it, I'll take it down.

I loved the footage, but the "purple sun" really gets on my nerves in a huge way. I know there was a fix posted at some point.. But damn....

This is NOT a reflection on your work Drew.. I just hate that bug

Jay

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the purple sun thing either. But I know how to fix it. I just haven't done it for these clips yet. Its kind of interesting though because you can see the sun, instead of it being a lot of bright light.

Great stuff. Really enjoyed those last couple of shots near the end. Thanks for posting in 1080p.

Regarding the flies... Fricke tells a funny story about flies swarming his lens in Egypt and ruining a couple of his shots on Baraka. The solution was to run a big fan that blew air across the camera's lens to keep the flies away.. heh.

You should post this at timescapes. :)

Yeah I need to get some bug off or something to keep the flies or whatever they are away from the lens. A fan is a good idea but I would like to have something that wouldn't attract more attention when I'm out shooting. The Red already gets a lot of attention when I go out shooting in places like Griffith Observatory. Not like its a bad thing but when your trying to convince the rangers there that you don't need a press pass or permit, less gear is better.

I'll make it over to your site Tom...just give me a sec.

That would be a good idea Richard. I'll have to look for one of those and see if it does the job. Don't know if it would keep the bugs away from the lens. Those little bastards are determined to ruin my shots.

Another idea might be to soak something in deet or another repellent and put it near the lens?

The thing about timelapse is that one idiotic bug can blow the whole shot, since it's very difficult to paint a fly or anything else (dust, etc) out of a bunch of moving frames.

Watch the deet - that stuff melts some plastics!
