  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Nikon Mount

Baloon and lens tissue are suggestion from Doug. I think that are still valid...

I followed this and it worked well.

There was a lot of LUBE on my PL mount (between the two plates) so be careful of that. You have to make sure the icable is also nicely seated int eh grove provided.

It´s great to have a nikon mount. I will probably buy one.

But i still don´t understand why it is so expensive.
A Nikon D40 DSLR comes with a nikon mount, a sensor, screen, chips and even a lense and costs less.

When you are making a camera for hundreds of thousands of people or just making a mounting for a few thousand people, the prices will be very different.

I am also one of the "Magic Five" witih Doug's anti vampire silver mounts.

Here are a couple shots from a Nikon 55mm 1.8f lens (Flowers
And
A shot of a full moon on a Nikon 500mm Mirror lens.

Needless to say, I'm having fun.

plus.. the nikon mount is machined.

Hey good stuff Jay,

Envious of you that you have a mount already... What settings did you shoot the moon with? fstop, iso...

You guys ain't seen nothing yet.

:-)

This afternoon, I took our RED (apparently the first here in Kansas City) to MK12 (www.MK12.com . . . clearly among the world's leading film and television motion graphic experts) here in Kansas City for some green screen tests using the Underdahl Nikon mount and Nikon lenses.

I will allow them to post the results of those tests and comment on their impressions of the camera (I expect a post later today), but it was pretty evident that they were impressed with the keys they were able to pull.

There's no doubt about it. . . this camera is an amazing tool.

so far the stills look great!
Nikon will be a great option for the lower budget indi features. However, I think in time... big budget productions might look at this as a viable option.
wasnt bourne 3 shot with mostly re-housed nikon glass?
Im not saying nikon will be a replacement of cine lenses by any means! But, i see my broke ass adopting nikons as a personal solution.

The MK12 guys are my heroes. Can't wait to see what they can do with a Red.

You've gotta be kidding? Shoot some footage on a Cooke S4 or a Zeiss Ultraprime and execute a non-trivial critical focus pull. Then try to do the same thing on your Nikon. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the desire and the ability to shoot some beautiful footage with Nikon primes. Heck, I've shot many projects with Nikon primes on an adaptered HVX. But please, lets be real. On bug budget films, rental cost of some of the great lenses available in the world is trivial. And those films are not going to dump their Master primes for Nikon slr lenses.

is there a canon version? excuse me if this has been covered before.

Oh my, isn`t there any legal issues when using the parts from Nikon BR3 without mentioning it? We used that exact same Nikon mount for many custom made DOF adapters back in the day. I still have few in inventory. This RED version of Nikon BR3 macro reversing ring is ten times pricier than the mount it`s derived from because of the new custom machined aluminum shim. It sure is the best quality and cost effective stainless steel Nikon mount from the manufacturer itself but why not give some credit?

Cheers,
T

There is a smart mount coming soon from Birger Engineering that allows you to use Canon EF lenses with electronic control of Iris and Focus - focus remapped on an follow focus type encoder know which should overcome some of the issues wsith focus on still lenses.

The EF lenses don't have manual iris so you need the smart mount.

There is also a Canon FD mount which lets you use the older manual FD style lenses. RED was going to make one but put it off so Kevin Halverson made and sells FD mount - do a search.

After I saw the Amer Cine write up on bourne (a few weeks ago) I got on the web and found this guy Peter Sensor http://www.jsinteractive.com/sensor/ I got a set of Nikon high speed primes and a 80 to 200 mm zoom. I should say I paid for and have not yet gotten them yet.

I am sure a person experienced with working on lenses could do what Peter does. That is install a focus ring, remove the iris click stops, and some other modifications... I did not know where to start and Peter had good advice and was very helpful.

The bottom line is I got a great price on some great glass that is ready to work with my FF system.

Any word from Evin's tests? Shipping this week maybe?
