  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Nikon lense use for video

It'd have the width but you forgot about the corners:

Of course that's assuming that DX lenses have an image circle only exactly big enough to cover a DX sensor. It might be a tad bigger, big enough for a 30x15mm sensor. More interestingly, it might be possible that some are and some aren't! Interesting stuff...

responding to Jim's comment - aftermarket companies like Tamron, Tokina, etc., mount up to Nikon and Canon cameras. Think of a Canon lens mounting up to a Canon DSLR as original equipment, with a cheaper Tokina as an alternative that works 100%.

So, Red camera and Red lenses would be original equipment, with Nikon or Canon as alternative lenses . . . that should work 100%.

Is this a fair take on this?

Tamron, Tokina etc. lenses for Canon EF do not always work 100% on newer Canon camera models. There have been quite a few cases where those lenses needed a firmware update when a new Canon body was released, for the lens to work on it, since the protocols were reverse-engineered rather than licensed. For the same reason, I believe the Birger mount does not work with every single "EF-compatible" lens from Sigma, Tamron, etc. As far as I have heard, Canon has not actually licensed their lens protocol to any other company.

Why are we expecting Jim n all to reinvent the wheel. Clearly they have said they will not electronically support other lenses with their
adapters.

The big question is will our investment in aftermarket pieces like the Birger EOS mount work with the Scarlet and Epic. This totally makes sense for low budget shows on RED. and many of these lenses will cover the FF sensor at 30mm wide as the size of standard 35m SLR FIlm frame is 24/36mm and EOS full frame camera is spec. the same.

Sure would like to hear someone from RED chime in here to reassure us early adopters about the continuing value of this important low budget aks!!! the Birger mt. adapted to Epic n Scarlet?????????

Breathing on many still lenses is not as bad as on many cine. zooms.

We have shot a buncha drama on our RED with Still lenses and have a bunch of focus pulls. We use a remote that spreads the limited travel of the lens over a wider control span. Even direct on the lens we have some pretty good focus pulls. ( totally agree cine. focus puller on big set... never gonna buy it!!!) When the budget is larger we should all rent or buy RED FF Pro Lenses!!!!

Actually that question was clarified by Jim Jannard a few days ago on a Scarlet User thread as follows:

We do have power and intelligent lens data interfaces, but we do not have the ability to integrate Canon or Nikon feedback and control inside our "brain". Not only is that something we choose not to do, it isn't ethical or legal. We would not want Canon to have full control of RED lenses on their camera either.

When asked on the thread:

“So does that mean that we cannot expect to have iris control on Canon EF and Nikon G lenses, and would have to go manual focus 100% of the time on them as well?

If so, then I guess I'll have to go for the 2/3" fixed or maybe interchangeable. No reason to spend the extra dough on the s35 if I can't get what I need out of it”

Jim responded with:

It will take something like a Birger adaptor to get what I think you are asking for. Or RED AF stabilized lenses.

It surprises me (greatly) that anyone would think we could or would support all electronic functions from another system. When have you ever seen this done? Does Nikon support Canon protocol? Help me out here...

i guess wishful thinking can lead to delusions after all. :)

i'm gonna have to find the funds for some higher end lenses. i know i have to compromise, but more and more it seems like SLR lenses are TOO MUCH of a compromise.

bring on the RED lenses!!
