  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Nikon Drops the Ball, D3s Only 720p

A perfect example of the kind of use that Scarlet and Epic will be excellent for since there is no difference in the image quality between stills and motion acquisition. Both are full resolution raw format.
Motion purposely shot for support of and extraction of stills will require very different techniques than motion shot for cinematic qualities though. They are inherently very different disciplines.
But I do look forward to having a single camera system that can do both without compromise.

Indeed : Im just saying that not all still photographers see the feature as a gimmick or something - this is the sort of thing that can/could sell me cameras - unlike a few more MP

On the different techniques and diciplines?

Im not sure what you mean

Canon gives us a nominal 1080P mode that only resolves about 480p without moire and aliasing issues.
we all know your rants against new canons are a must.. as you said you're resisting to buy canon1.. but to be so untrue it hurts anyone's clemency.. or can your eyes find those artifacts in any shot you see?

send me the list.. per each flaw someone will credit you a million in your account lol

Just on casual viewing on a desktop monitor, aliasing is very visible in the scene with the carnival ride, the spinning swing. Not up to 720p from a good HD video camera.
Not saying the footage isn't beautiful, but the camera is nowhere close to the max that 1080p is capable of. In fact many clips I have looked at actually look better when scaled to 720p. Some of the artifacts get smoothed over with a good downscale. As I said above though, Khalid has handled the camera very well for this footage, not taxing the limits of the codec. He uses the camera to its best capabilities. The 5d's strengths are low light sensitivity and 35mm DOF. For the price these capabilities are unique in the video market, but not without compromise due to the way Canon scales the sensor to 1080p and encodes the video.

If you are shooting motion for stills you will want to shoot faster shutter rates to get clean stills with minimal motion blur.
In cinematic techniques motion blur becomes another creative aspect that one uses to achieve the desired look for a scene. One of the reasons there is so much interest in shooting 24p at 1/48th sec for instance. It mimics the classic film look.
This is one example that comes to mind.

not sure yet.. moire & aliasing.. humm
or aliasing & moire will be next gang's epic

Im aware of the shutter speed conundrum - I have not understood how RED intend or do get round it

The only solution I could see is 120 FPS, 240th exposure and the 24p created by frame blending of some nature

My little test used two cams one a 1/50th and one a 500th creating both acceptable motion and stills

You can shoot normal frame rates and high shutter speeds to freeze motion. this is no different than shooting the 4 or 5fps raw burst mode on a still cam, just motion frame rates. At 30fps video rates the motion stutter is a lot less obvious from high shutter speeds than at 24fps. A modest overcrank in the 50-60fps range gives a pleasant smooth slo-mo too. You see this kind of shooting style on slo-mo replays of football games for instance. High shutter speeds, normal frame rates.
