I have the 24mm F2, 35mm F2, and the 55mm F1.2. I stopped using my 35mm F1.4 because the color didn't match at all. While all lenses breath to some degree, the ones listed above don't draw attention to themselves. I have done several projects with them along with the 20mm F2.8, 28mm F2, and 85mm F1.4. Some of the features are in distribution, some have won awards, and some of the commercials you might have seen on national television.

Are they as sharp as a set of new Zeiss lenses? No. But, they do love people. And most of the projects I work on have people in them. So, the Nikons work great in those cases.

There have been times when a director wanted a different look than the Nikons give. On those projects, Zeiss glass was easy to rent.

What was the color difference you had with the 35mm f1.4? I noticed you still use the 85mm f1.4. I'm assuming they are the same generation.

i have;
28mm f2 AIS - decent amount of breathing - too much for my tastes
35mm f2 AI - small amount of breathing - just on the cusp of usable
50mm f1.4 AI - a little breathing. but ok.
50mm f2 AI - more breathing than the 1.4 but ok.
85mm f2 AIS - decent amount of breathing but it's tele so it's ok.

i've got more but they're not even worth mentioning...

i'm wondering what series your lenses are? AI, AIS, AF-D?

my 28mm f2 AIS is unusable for cinema for my tastes. with a full frame sensor it's fine. but with the crop, it's way too much breathing for a "normal" lens... i'm wondering if the 24 is any better?

i don't really care about sharpness. as long as they're all as soft as each other :)

oh yeah. and what series was your 35 f1.4?

i used to have the AI version but traded it in a few years ago... i think that was a mistake now.

Can you post a few examples of the unpleasantness?

The 35 F2 and the 55 F1.2 are AI, the others are AIS. I don't remember what the 35 F1.4 is. I loaned it to a client to use with their Redrock M2. I believe it is an AI, but, can't swear to it.

Sounds like you might want to take a look at the ZF lenses. I haven't used them. But, from what I hear, they have minimal breathing. Or just bite the bullet and grab a set of cine lenses like the RPPs.
