  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

nikon 70-200

nope, no iris ring.

"G" stands for gelded. literally means "castrated" or "emasculated" (hell of a thing to decide to name your lenses, right???). If your looking at a G lens, move on :)

Actually, I just read that it's possible to use the G lens with a mount modifier. Check out this thread: http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=22087

With the Nikon mount sold by RED you can only use lenses that have the aperture ring, i.e. non "G" series lenses. You can then have that adapter modified by Doug Underdahl to have some control over the aperture in those "G" lenses if you so desire.

this is true, for an extra fee, you can send your mount to Doug and he'll modify it so you can use G lenses. However, the mount isn't very sophisticated in that you cannot tell what f stop you're at or choose an f stop. This is fine for some, inadequate for others.

Regardless, you shouldn't get that lens anyway if you want to use it with RED. You can get the 80-200 with manual aperture ring for half that price.

Yeah, I've just cancelled my birger mount order and now going the nikon route. So I'm reading all the nikon threads and learning. I don't think I'm going to get the g lenses, so i don't think i need doug's modification. thanks for the stop limitation info.

dougs mount is great in that there are a ton of cheap G lenses out there, but most of those cheap lenses aren't as good or fast as the manual stuff anyway, and then you have that aperture control issue.

Good on doug for giving us more options, but it's just not for me.

by the way, I went to my local camera shop and tested/bought the nikon 17-35, 28-70, 80-200, all f/2.8 for $3553 :)
