Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)
yes I did. I thought it could be a good run and gun solution for certain documentary situations. But the results where so and so. Technical it works fine on the Red Nikon Mount but I wasn't satisfied with the quality - espacially between 200-300 mm.
It's a little more expensive than the 18-300, but the Tamron 24-70/2.8 Di VC is worth considering for run-and-gun work. Autofocus isn't supported on it via the electronic Nikon mount yet, but its performance is very solid on a 4K/5K frame across the aperture range. Carrying one of those along with a Micro Nikkor 200/4 makes for a pretty versatile light-weight field kit.
We like the Nikon FX lenses especially the new 28-300 and with Dragon coming...this will be the needed full frame. I think FX with the Epic 5K and beyond.
I have the 18-200 and it's surprisingly good for a single all-around lens. My research suggested that the extra focal length offered by the 300mm wasn't very usable.
My only issue has been that it's a bit slow and doesn't have a consistent iris across the range. For situations where you have plenty of light this doesn't create any real problems.
I shoot a lot of live concerts and thought it would be great to have the full range in such a small lens and for the most part this has been true. But lately I haven't had quite enough light and it's been a bit troublesome.
Dragon might make it ideal again, though you probably want to limit yourself to 4k (it's not full frame) and just take advantage of the higher sensitivity.
I have just ordered the Nikon 24-70 and 80-200, both f/2.8 consistent and think between all of them I will always get a great shot.
