  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8 DAWG FOOTY

I don't think the five year warranty transfers, which is why I went new. For a couple hundred more than a used one, I wanted the 5 year warranty. But that's just me. If you can snag one for under $1200 used and in great shape it will be well worth it. There were some in the early batches that I think had some issues, but as far as I know a lot of those issues got ironed out in the later models.

Hey Steve, are you sure about it not transferring?

I've had to exchange equipment that has failed before, and never was I even asked for a receipt, they just have you send it in, check the serial #, then send it back out

That ebay listing, by the way, is for a lens that was purchased in 2004, so there is only a year left on that warranty

This may be a stupid question but I thought Nikon AF lenses didn't have an aperture ring. So with a "dumb" Red mount I thought you could only use AI manual lenses because the AF and AF-S lenses would have no way of stopping down the lens without having a mount like Birger to interface with the lens.

It says in the warranty papers that the 5 year warranty only extends to the original purchaser and is not assignable or transferrable.

Looks nice, but whats with the jumpy rolling shutter looking stuff...especially on the lightpole in the last shot. Is it just in the web compression or does it exist in the original footage too?

Weston, I don't see that in the original footage, although I was pushing the footage pretty far with that last shot in Redcine, crushed the blacks way down and played with my colors. It seems like when you push the footage in post really far, the original 4k looks fine, but something funky travels over to h.264 web-compression-land. I've seen this problem a lot with my own stuff

Nathan, this is an AF-S lens. I don't know much about the AF Nikon lineup and which lenses have manual or electronic aperture control or why some do and some dont. Evin Grant would really be the one to ask about that.

Damn...

Nathan, this 17-35 has a manual aperture ring

And of course Richard or are you joking!!!

You don't need Evin Grant, anyway he is not using Nikkor glass on RED so often.

He is left now to the "higher line cine glass"...to rest there :).

Have a look at

I'm not joking. I can control the iris mechanically. I assume this lens will also control the iris electronically since there is a small aperture override switch that prevents you from manually turning it

No you aren't joking. I just checked Nikon's site and you can clearly see the aperture rings on some of the AF-S lenses - including the 17-35. I just made an assumption based on the AF-S NIKKOR 24-70 f/2.8G ED lens that we have. It doesn't have an aperture ring. I just assumed that this was the case for all of the AF-S zooms.

Does anybody know why Nikon decided to include the manual aperture ring on some of the AF-S zooms and didn't include it with others? Kind of a weird choice.

Richard you must UNLOCK your lens from AF use.

there is unlock "sort of button" on the aperture ring...

Or ask the closest Nikkor lens master user to show you all that little tricks.

It is unlocked Sanjin, otherwise I wouldn't be able to turn the aperture wheel.

What I'm interested in now is a possible rehousing of this lens down the line. I know Peter Sensor can do a basic cine-mod to the lens by removing the hard clicks, dampening the iris blades, adding a focus/aperture .8 gear, and putting hard stops in the focus wheel, but I'm wondering if there is anyone out there that has attempted to rehouse the entire lens and somehow give the focus a more 'cine-like' throw because right now, its very short.

Read about Nikon 24-70mm AF-S:

Name: Nikon calls this the AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED.

AFS: Quiet focusing SWM (silent wave motor) with instant manual focus override.

G: No aperture ring. Useless on manual focus cameras.

Only works on AF cameras newer than about 1992, depending on camera.

ED: Magic glass for sharper images.

All Nikons had manual aperture ring up until the early 00's. This includes the first generation pro AF-S zooms released in 99 (I think) -- The 17-35mm, 28-70mm, and 80-200mm f2.8.

If you want lenses that work on both a dumb Nikon mount (like Red's) and the upcoming Birger mount, these are the ones to get.

You are absalutly right,
I have all three... and I love it
