We produced an extra-low budget, one afternoon, one location short film with a few smart heads and strong shoulders, but alas... we were a couple of weeks late getting together and our "ideal" location turned it's grasses brown. Shot on RedMX. Anyone know if a pro color grading suite would be able to color the brown grass green or is this out of reach even for elite tools? Long hours in AE does not sound appealing. A frame is attached. Any suggestions welcomed.

Hello to all! Been a few years since I peeked into RedUser. I'm not a Red owner, have pals with such wonderful tools.

From what I see, your blacks are magenta, which is, you guessed it, will affect grass and will reduce it vibrance. So, either adjust your blacks or, if you want to keep the image as is, you'll need to key the grass and adjust to taste.

Done in Lightroom, but same could be achieved in Resolve with a key. You could also import the video clips into Photshop CS6 to get the same effect.

BOOM. Looks pretty good!

haha thanks, about 20 seconds and a brush in Lightroom. If there's movement the video will require tracking but it's doable (albeit a lengthy process).

Matt, I love you!
Thank you so much for your time and skill!

You guys rock. You have no idea the heartache I've had over this, and you step up and tell me it's totally fixable. Thank you!

Will try out the PS6 since the whole piece is under 3min. Can you clarify the technique or where I can learn more about it?

Is there anyone watching this thread with a Resolve I can try a clip with?

A lot of us have Resolve, just post an .r3d grab or short clip and watch as people try to make the corrections and post the results. Is there a lot of movement in the film?

In photoshop create a smart mask of the brown grass and use the hue/saturation filter and see if that works. I'm not a photoshop expert at all so maybe someone else can be more helpful or have a better technique. Here's a basic tutorial on color correcting in Photoshop: http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2012/07/tutorial-color-correcting-video-in-photoshop-cs6.html

The grass and the skintones are very close in HSL so you will have to track isolate her around her face. Not a huge problem unless she turns into profile, etc. I don't think you can get a clean key just of an HSL qualification.
You'd be surprised. Sometimes if you qualify the key very carefully and use luminance to knock out the stuff you don't want to affect (like skintone), you can get away with it. Otherwise, you just throw a garbage matte in as a final step and track it, which takes maybe 1 additional minute, depending on the length of the shot.

People forget that O Brother Where Art Thou did a lot of the opposite more than 10 years ago -- taking lush green grass and making it look brown and ugly, which was the intentional scheme of the movie. This kind of thing is done all the time, particularly in cases where you have reshoots that happen six months later, and the background has been radically altered due to weather and seasonal changes.

Sarah learn Resolve. Just the lite version is very powerful. It will blow your mind what you can do, even in a short amount of time.

Here I would HSL the grass, and use a subtractive window around her face and most of her hair, and track that window. Then I would darken the grass and shift it to green and increase saturation. Thats it. Might take 6 minutes tops.

It would take you forever to do in PS.
Resolve would take about 2 minutes per shot.

Sounds like I need to try Resolve. I'll give it a go soon. Thanks everyone for the input. Not necessary, but here's a simple short clip if anyone wants to try it.

I agree -- even less if you could recall the same correction every time a similar shot came up.

I forgot to add in my post the need to soften the key as well, which helps disguise it and make it blend in a little better.
