what are you guys thinking about the new OT rules in the Playoffs?
now a Field goal doesnt end the match, the opponent team gets a chance to score.

What Does the Playoff Overtime Rule Change Mean?
The coin toss will still occur.
If the first team scores a touchdown on the first possession, they win.
If the first team kicks a field goal on the first possession, the opposing team will still have a chance to score.
If the first team kicks a field goal and the second team kicks a field goal, sudden death will occur and the first team to score thereafter wins.
If the defense scores first, the team wins.
If, at the end of a 15-minute overtime period the game is still tied, a new overtime period will start and it will be sudden death.

to make it related to red....ehm....would one red drive be enough to shoot a whole game...hehe

I hate it. But I'm also one of the few people that loved the old sudden death overtime. My feeling was always, they are professionals, the defense gets paid too. only about 52% of the teams that got the ball 1st won on the opening drive so it wasn't like the coin toss decided the winner.

If they pass this for the regular season, you will start to see more tie games, maybe as many as 2-3 a year.

I did hear Mike Golic suggest that OT just be a another 10 minute quarter. That I like.

i am used to regular overtimes...i mean no sudden deaths at all, in soccer sudden deaths really sucked.

after watching my 1st whole nfl season last year, i felt a simple field goal wasnt satisfiying enough.

its like... get the ball on the 20, bring it to the 50 and then kick. too simple inmho

but this change is a big compromise, what next, no touchdowns on punt
returns?

to make it red related...ehm...would people get heat problems running the RED through a whole game :)

I don't like it.

IE: What if the team that wins the coin toss looses on a defensive play , like a pick 6. IS the offense supposed to come on the field and give their defense the same chance?

Do not mess with OT. It works. It makes the game exciting. I think the NCAA OT is great for TV but not great for the game.

It's pro football. The point it to win in regulation. Fight hard during regulation time. OT is the punishment you get for not winning. You get to flip a coin.

I think the rule change takes a bit of the guts out of the game.

Next it'll be a field goal shootout. GAWD!

only 3 games from 27 playoff games which went to OT would have benefited from the new Rule.

this whole dicussion started because of favres loss to the saints in OT, but the vikings owner was against it.

they should just have added another 10 min.

Actually, I believe I read that the percentage had been getting much higher.

I like the 10 minute quarter idea.

What I REALLY hate is the kneel downs at the end of a game - running out the clock for the last 2 minutes when a team is ahead.

I say stop the clock after every play after the two minute warning (maybe shorten the play clock a little).

Do you think the Epic will make it practical to shoot a football game in motion and choose frames for stills? What frame rate and shutter speed would you need to shoot to get sharp stills.?

Kneel down is annoying, but the coaches have timeouts to fight that (Am i right?)

on the other hand, i like the tactics, and kneel down is one of it.

and the coin/FG combo raised to 58% or so.

....ehm....will MXed R1s be able to cover the whole DR on a field from shadow to light in Overtime?

I think that this is definitely a step in the right direction. I've long thought that the sudden death overtime rule was one of the worst rules in pro sports. I understand the argument of "if you lose the coin toss, your defense should be able stop them." However, over the past decade the rules changes have made the NFL a VERY offense friendly league. Ten years ago a great offense would run up against a buzz saw defense and would have a tough time putting up 10 points. Now a that same great defense does a good job if they hold that same great offense to 20-24pts. And say you have two mediocre defensive teams going into overtime... why should the defense whose team wins the coin toss be let off the hook, simply because their team won the coin toss.

It's just a bad rule. I think 60%+ of the teams that win the coin toss end up winning the game.

My idea has always been to just keep playing. Let the momentum of the game continue, and whoever scores after time expires wins. Also, how long is it going to take for the ref to come out and explain the OT rules? But I do like the college format much better. A team is always going to be defined by how they operate in the red zone, so let them fight it out there. It always seems the better team in college OT ends up winning.

Fight On!

agreed. college ot's are more exciting and fairer to me. Thats where NFL playoffs are headed I believe

I like whatever rule that allows the Patriots to win. For example, the tuck rule. If it goes against us, I hate the rule. In 2007, the Pats didn't have to worry about overtimes. I do like the idea of a 10 minute overtime. If it's still tied, call it a day, neither team deserves to win. :-)

Oh God... a piece of my soul just died after reading this. Please, never bring up the tuck rule again. Just a request from a die hard Raider fan who has suffered enough. :emote_whack:

Omar, all good things come to an end. The #$@! rule started the Patriots rise to stardom, and then the Immaculate Catch in the Superbowl against the Giants quite possibly ended it. Patriots are still a good team, however some of their core guys have left and the team just doesn't have the same aura that it used to. Still good for 10, 11 wins a year but not sure they are Superbowl bound for a while. The Raiders....I loved their uniform colors growing up. I loved Marcus Allen. But they have a crazy owner who has no idea what he is doing. So, might be a while for you guys too. We tried helping you out with Richard Seymour.....I would love to see the Raiders return to being a formidable team. I think it would be good for the NFL.

Steve, thanks for the encouragement... even if it is from a Pats fan...lol.

Yeah, Al is absolutely crazy. I became a Raider fan when I was a little kid back in the days of Marcus and Howie. It probably will be a while until we get back in the mix.

The Pats will always be good as long as Brady is healthy and at the helm (damn it kills me to type that) but I know what you mean about losing that certain something. Those vets that never put up the best numbers but always came through in the clutch can rarely be replace. Part of me was happy to see them win at least one Super Bowl... well I should say I was happy for Bruschi... he was a senior at my high school when I was a freshmen. That dude single handedly carried our school through the playoffs as a defensive lineman.

but you only have three time outs which may get used up earlier in the half. And it really isn't much of a genius tactic to let 30 seconds run off the clock three or four times. Very boring finish to what was possibly very exciting up to that point.

The problem to me is that the clock stops for an incomplete or out of bounds play but doesn't stop for a successful play - run or pass in the middle of the field. College handles this a little in that they stop the clock on a first down long enough for them to move the chains and reset so the team doesn't lose much or anytime as long as they make successful plays and hustle between them.

Pretty tough for any current camera to handle the DR when that shadow moves across the field. One of my buddies rides video for the multicameras in the truck for a lot of the games and that always drives him nuts.
