Hey Ryan

I have not tried the DI with a solid state drive but it works great with CF cards.
I have both the DI and extreme. They have great potential as a secure backup solution for the Red one. I have not had the chance to test these drives the way I'd like because my Red has been in for upgrade. That should all change this week. I will test both and report results. Connecting the two drive should allow for quick redundant backup for CF cards. The next generation NVS2500 should be on the way soon and several Red users will be testing them.

Nexto is committed to providing an elegant solution to Red One backup.
Here are the two models I'm testing. Extreme ND2700(Gold) and DI ND2725(black)

Thanks for the input. I was planning on getting the ND2700, as the 2725 seems to just be geared for SxS and P2 card applications. (Even though they also offer CF card use.)

You mention connecting two drives - how is that possible? I was thinking about getting two separate units for backup, but if I do not have to do that, it would be great.

The basic way to backup onto 2 Nexto devices is be using the "sync" function
of the Nexto.

Let's assume you are using the Video (DI) as the primary and want to make a 2nd
backup onto the eXtreme

1. Copy the information onto the video using standard way of inserting your
CF card into the Nexto (or direct connect via USB to the Red drive)
2. Using the menu click until you get to Power Off Time (PwrOFF). DO a long
press to change the default time to 30 seconds then one more long press to
get to 60 seconds. Then one short click to next.
3. Take your USB cable and attach the mini-adapter to it. You then will have
an USB with 2 mini ends
4. When complete scroll through the Video's menu until you get to "Sync"Do a
long press on the button to select this
5. Your are then asked what direction you are moving data:
From the Nexto to another storage device (which is what we want)
From USB to Nexto (this is used when moving data between laptop and Nexto etc)
6. Connect the USB cable to the Video's USB OTG connection
7. Choose Nexto -> USB and do a long press on the button
8. Turn on the eXtreme and connect the USB cable to it.
9. The eXtreme will show PC<-> USB. The video will show "sync Nexto?" A
short press for yes and the unit will transfer the data. The screen will
show when the transfer is done and it is safe to disconnect the USB cable.
10. To verify data on the 2nd unit merely take the original CF card and
place it in the eXtreme. Use the eXtreme's auto verify to double check.

Hope this helps

Thanks, that is helpful. Do you think that method is faster then just copying the same card to both drives independently?

By the way, I ordered two enclosures and two 128GB SSD's. They should arrive next week. I'll post back about how they perform.

Update-

Update-

So I just got back from a shoot in Alaska where I was shooting in a helicopter on flash cards. I used the Nexto Extreme with a Corsair 128GB SSD to transfer the cards to. I can't recommend this configuration enough! The drive and enclosure worked flawlessly, and I was secure in knowing that no data would be lost in the transfer. Additionally, since the drive is SSD and requires very little power, the internal battery lasted all day. I was able to fill up the entire drive before using up the battery- there was still a lot left. (With normal drives you can only transfer about 80GB of content before using up the internal battery.

This is a great way to go. :)

We really like the Nexto products as well. The second unit for instant backup is definitely faster than copying the cards twice The unit is tiny, simple to use and works great.

Thanks Ryan for sharing your experience!

I use 2 Nextos 2525 since day one (1 1/2 year now) and always thought a SSD would be the perfect upgrade. FYI, I have 20 8GB CFs and erase them only if all footage is backuped on tape (LTO) and HD. In the field the Nexto's are convenient, reliable (even with a HD) - a brilliant backup tool and must-have.
