Do any of you have any experience or knowledge of the Nexto 500GB Portable Storage Devise?

I was thinking maybe this Nexto devise would be a good solution for downloading the Red CF Memory Cards in the field. It would also be nice for download the Red Drives into it too, but I don’t see how.

I was thinking maybe this Nexto portable hard drive would be a good solution for downloading the CF Cards in the field.

I'd appreciate any feedback, comments, or advise on this Nexto Portable Storage Devise.

Thanks for your time.

use it regularly for CF backup, or even 2 of them as main copy units when i´m in remote locations without laptop.
it´s a great little device, but the internal battery is quite weak, it holds for about 5 - 6 copies of 16GB Cards, so you want to go for the external Battery as well.
I use it a lot within my car with the 12V car adapter.
Copying of 16GB including "fast" file verification takes about 7 - 8min, and so far i never had a bad file on the next.
Sometimes, but really rare the copy fails without reason, turning the device off for a minute and trying it again did solve it most of the time.

Never did copy a Red Raid to the Nexto, but should be possible.

We've used Nextos for a couple of years for CF card downloads and love them. I find them reliable without exception. In two years of regular use we've never lost a bit data due to the Nexto. I agree about the battery but they also make an external battery that works well and greatly extends operating times.

Ive used it mine for several years and loved it Never had a glitch aside from the battery dying pretty quick. But I think I recall I was able to recharge it using the usb port from the red. But that may have changed with the new red firmware updates.

now we are gonna need an ssd version! sorry for the hijack but any solution for portable / no laptop back up of ssd? :-)

Exact same experiences here. Great little thing.

It is great for the price but I have had a drive have a complete failure where all the footage would have been lost if I didn't still have the originals. It is a single drive so no RAID protection but for the size and price it is great. The drive is easy to replace and you could replace the original spinning drive with an SSD if you want faster speed, lower power consuption and better reliability.

oh...and both the internal and external batteries drop dead within a few months.

I recommend it but: once I misread the "Copy failed " readout (it ran out of batteries during the copy and I was not NEXTO it!) and ended up erasing the original CF....won't happen again! I plan to use it for my Scarlet CFs

BTW, would my Lexar 300x (45 Mbs/sec CF cards) be enough for Scarlet???

Does anyone know if these units will ever enable r3d playback? I've had my unit for 3 years now and at time of purchase both Nexto and B&H claimed that Red playback on the internal screen would only be a few months away.........still waiting

Whomever told you that was pulling your leg or whatever the Aussie saying would be to make a sale. Those things are incapable of it, nor could they ever be designed in such a way as to make it possible.

The screen is almost a joke, it's good enough for "Copy failed!", but that's that, it would never reproduce an image!

Thanks for the prompt reply,
Nexto definitely advertised that Red support was coming - one of the main reasons I bought it at the time. No shortage of manufacturers and/or distributers making all sorts of unbacked claims out in the marketplace nowadays............. that's why it's such a pleasure to be a Red customer!!!

If you want such a product, it could be done with the proper engineering and I know it because I actually planned out the design in my head the other day when I was thinking about some other stuff that we had discussed on this forum regarding easy peasy storage products, but nobody is making anything of the sort so far as I know.

I've got two (Extreme and DI) and they've always preformed perfectly. I do have the external battery on the DI. Would be great if they had a larger capacity SSD version. The esata output has always been a plus.

If you want an SSD, just pop one in. They are user-upgradable. As to whether or not any old one will do, I can't say as SSDs are tricky little monsters.

What do you mean? SSD is the media coming out of Scarlet/Epic

I may sound foolish here but: SSD used in Scarlet are like SSD used as hard drives?

SSD is a generic term that refers to a solid-state device that is used for storage purposes. It doesn't mean any specific type, unless taken into the context of the device which you are referring to. For the purposes of discussion here, you should refer to the SSD used with RED cameras as RED SSD, as they are RED designed and customized to their cameras. An SSD used with a Nexto device or a computer would be called an SSD drive if you want to be specific.

They were probably talking about their video storage products, which do support the customized RED CF cards. Nexto has chosen to try and shoehorn Arri ProRes support into their latest and greatest but they have not stated anything relating to RED in their communications. If they are doing something, it's between them and RED.
