  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

News from Cool Lights

The reason I don't release prices these days before they're ready is people kind of "lock in" on that price and don't understand it if there's some change later because of other information learned. It's best to just wait till we have all the facts and then announce I think. It'll be good pricing just like all our other products are.

I understand Richard- I will check back here regularly 8)

This looks like a solid product I will buy, Richard. You only need a thungsten/daylight switch to compete with kinoflo.

I think your idea of keeping the 2500 as light as possible is very important, Richard. The lillipop on my 4bank flo didn't last that long with the weight so I have a permanent griphead on the thing now and it's rock-solid - and balance isn't bad either. I'd probably do the same thing with the 2500, though too much weight could add significant forward weight on a lightstand.

On the 600's you have devised a beautiful -green system, would you do the same here?

Cheers,
Dale

Hi Dale,

On the 2500, we would have at least one minus green panel which would velcro on. They will be big though! The bicolor version wouldn't need a minus green panel at all.

Lollipop shouldn't be a problem for 1200 or 2500 as they are not as heavy as even one of our CL-455P flos since most of the power management is external in the "ballast" box.

Richard. I am planning an entire kit for a feature film shoot in Poland and in the UK next summer. The quotes I have for the kit I'm gonna need is making me sway towards just buying from you as an investment for projects ahead. My worry as ever is being battered with import duties and taxes. Would it make a difference if I ordered an entire kit all in one go or buy them all separately...to the UK. It might even be worth shipping them to an address in Poland and then I can drive back in the van, to the UK, after the shoot.

Gonna needs enough fluorescents (4x 4-banks prob be fine) for a forty foot greenscreen, multiple units of each of the tungsten's available and a few HMI's.

Any advice?

Wow, sounds like fun. Never been to Poland.

Anyway, on import duties I think it all depends upon if they have some kind of progressive tax in the UK. No one (and we've had a lot) thats ordered from us told me the duties were oppressive for lighting. As far as Poland goes, I don't know much about their taxes at all, if any. If there aren't any, you're right and shipping to there might be the way to go. Just drop me a note at info@coollights.biz when you're ready to start ordering and we can hash it out. Thanks!

Thanks for that!!

Will be in touch in the future. Just out of interest, barring unforseen circumstances is there a minimum time you would recommend for ordering. Are items quite often back ordered? For arguments sake in a 'normal' scenario would 8 weeks be plenty of time?

Having bought from coollights several times, I can tell you Richard's stuff tends to sell out, so if you know you're going to need it and you have the money I would buy it when you see it, especially so you can test in time to make sure everything works out the way you think it's going to work out. I've waited to order a couple times only to hear that what I wanted was snapped up by another reduser.

I think we'll have those particular portable flos back in stock in about 4 weeks to ship from China and 8 weeks to ship from USA. We'd probably just ship from China its about the same cost or just a bit less to Europe.

Richard.... I remember us having a conversation on the phone over a year ago about my hopes for a 2'X2' led fixture..... glad something like that is in the works with the 2400....

I still think a C-stand ( or even a tripod ) that can be loaded up with D cell rechargeable batteries in the pipes would be awesome as well.... personally, I'm just way to busy to mess with building anything so I'm so glad your around!

When can we buy stock in coollights? hehe

What you mean by dazzle? Ok, wiktionary saved my ass...

So you mean they're relly bright? Just that?

Yes they are bright, and different from fluos. When I use fluo, I can put them in a near axis from the camera, people can endure fluos, but it is more difficult with Led, because you mark the retinea with all the little needles. So, I have to enlarge the angle from the camera.

The image is much more detailled than with fluo.

The difference between spot and flood is interesting too. I don't know wich one I prefer.

This intrigues me. Is that due to the fact the while a flourescent source is really a soft source, a LED fixture really is 256/600 tiny spotlights?

I tested some LEDs in Amsterdam, and just loved the quality of light they gave on faces.

Thats why I like LEDs. They are direct light source that is soft because it is a broad source. Nowadays I would probably hook up some of these for a large blinder than a par array with ACLs fitted.

Yes it is. Each little Led is a "hard light", but put them all together, and you get something hard, softed by the great surface and numbers. It makes the relief of a face more apparent. The shadows also, are different.

After using them intensively for interviews, I can say that I love them.

Yes I talked about this in my article from earlier in the year here:

http://www.coollights.biz/wordpress/archives/72

Basically I call these "digital lights". Like LCD displays where each pixel by itself isn't particularly interesting, the collection of them is quite interesting in what it can do. And so it is with LEDs.

Any one of those "miniature spotlights" by itself is totally uninteresting other than as a panel display for whether power is on or whatever. Put a collection together though and you get a very usable and totally different type of light.

Not a single point light source but rather a collection of small point light sources which is broad like a flo but has longer throw and is a bit more hard in character. Still doesn't have the shadow projection/rendering of a single point light source like a 575w or 1200w HMI though. So, its just different and will work fine for 90% of the uses you would use it for. Just when you want to use it with cookies or gobos, its ineffective for that.

Thats why a fresnel will still have some uses and be able to do some things for a while that we can't do with an LED panel. And a flo is still a very economical way to get a lot of soft light. Thus, its why we won't stop making flos or fresnels.
