  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

News from Cool Lights

Sounds like a very good way to put all those big V-lock batteries to use, once the big upgrade from R1 to Epic is on it's way.

The Current Cool lights are incredible, the filter trays are extremely high quality as well as the filters, and personally I love being able to stick a V lock on the back of the light and have a self contained source that will last for hours. It is really hard to beat that portability and flexibility, and its nice because i have a ton of RED BRICKS.

Personally, I hate ballasts. I can understand the desire to use them, but they drive me nuts because I have a tendency to loose them :)

Thanks Jarred for dropping by and for your kind words. You're right about ballasts, of course its always better when you can get it all in one package.

I worry about the heat though in a "Miltos 2500" thats all in one big box. And weight too. The DC to DC converter is going to be big on that model to handle the wattage.

If we had a metal version, how many places for V or AB mounts would you guys want on the back? 4 or so? If so, we're definitely back to a normal yoke like on our studio fluorescents at that point. Thats a lot of weight. In fact, it would probably be in a housing just like or very similar to our studio flos to handle all the electronics.

Chris, I doubt this one could crack open, the casing is pretty hard. And large enough you probably won't lose it ;-).

Just saw this thread and had to add that we've lit our whole (modest) studio with Richard's Cool Lights and they are absolutely fantastic. After nearly a year we have only had to change 4 tubes out of about 20 quad banks; and 2 bulbs out of 15 HMI spot lights. Colour temp and intensity remain as the first day we turned them on. I'll try to post some pics after this weekend's shoot...

(Richard: wonderful to see Cool Lights getting such great support! All the best :seeya:)

James, glad to hear from you again! Thanks for the status update and hope you're getting lots of use out of your studio and your REDs.

Alex, that will give you a bit over an hour on a 2500 or 2 hours on a 1200, is that enough time?

the 2500 looks like just what the doctor ordered!!

thanks richard!! looking forward to it count me in for 2!!

Yes I've been thinking about adding V or AB mount options to the external "power converter" as I call it. It would basically be either 90 to 250VAC 50/60 hz in one side (AC) or 10 to 24 VDC in the other side. Then out is the 24VDC that the panel needs. Adding the optional battery mounts to the outside of the case is not a huge deal. And yes, we could use this with future products. We'd put a carabiner and chain on the box too, to hang it on the light stand, or whatever. Just like we do with the current LED 600 power supply.

I'd also chime in here to say Richard has been really helpful and very free with his knowledge and advice.

Maybe 1 or 2 battery mounts on the fixture and an option to plug in external power, be that a lead acid battery or DC.

Another thought about the bi-color LEDs that you are working on. From what I understand they will come with two dimmers; one dimmer controls the intensity of the "warm" LEDs and one of the "cool" ones.

Couldn't it be an alternative that one dimmer controls the light temperature (i.e. middle position all LEDs on full power; when turning either way the "warmer" or "cooler" only are dimmed.
Then a second dimmer that controls the overall intensity.

That should make it easier to control the fixture with just one hand; and make for quicker light adjustments.

Well, if it is technically feasible.

Hi Paul,

You mean like this?

CLLED2500-5Cm.jpg

We should call it the "Miltos" after the person that egged me on.

Hopefully around end of year.

Richard,

I want it too. I use my 4 x 600 Led since 2 monthes nearly everyday. I love this light. I was bored with fluo, and HMI are too heavy. The little Led600 are wonderful. I use them with little battery. No more AC outlet to plug.
I only see one inconvenient : they dazzle much more than fluo, so I need to increase my angle from the camera.
4 time more power (miltos) should be great with a big tripod !

Olivier

Are these devices using Buckpuck modules to cycle the LEDs on and off faster than a camera would see? What about when they are dimmed? Is that possible (other than with scrims, of course)?

I have shot variable frame rates with the RED and the Coollights 600 and didn't notice any flicker even when dimmed. I expect the new Miltos 2500 to behave the same way.

If I buy a pair of them, will they be Miltoses? Or Milti?

These look great. I have two Coollight LEDs with V-mounts, love them, and would love to get a pair of Milti as well...

Wow, lots of comments to wake up to.

Max, thanks for your kind words as always. Loved your last video. You should post a link to it here if you didn't already. Very "glossy"!

Martin, as always thanks for your design contributions. You are definitely thinking deeply about it and we appreciate that. That's a great idea, I just am not sure about what kind of control you'd need to do that and it almost sounds "digital" which brings us into a whole other development domain beyond just analog and would stretch out the development time and budget and also the ultimate price of the fixture as well.

Olivier that's great. Glad to hear its that useful to you. Very gratifying! Yes LEDs are bright, that's the secret of their throw and power. Even more important than ever that the talent understand the secrets of dealing with lighting. Just tell them "you wouldn't look at the sun or an arc welder would you? So don't look at this light. Always keep it out of your direct focus." We make testers here wear sunglasses as there's too much glare in the room with a lot of these units and its unbearable. No they're not Oakley's however.

Pietro, yes I'm pretty sure that's what he means, but maybe he'll come back for a comment.

Austin, We don't do it quite that way. There is no flicker at all at any frame rate or shutter speed. Yes they do dimming but not completely to zero.

Miltos, the dimming should be just as good or better on the larger models.

Meryem, glad to hear from you again. I think you'll love the 'milti' too. ;-)

Dale, thanks as always. I guess none of our lighting is keeping you warm up there in Canada. When is ALWAYS the question and as we often see, the moment you tell people WHEN you think it will be, it magically multiplies to longer. So, lets be cautiously optimistic and say end of year or beginning of next year but lets don't count on it just yet!
