Hi Everyone,

Next week, Cool Lights will have re-stock on many of our most popular existing products coming in, as well as a few new items. Here is a preview...

EXISTING PRODUCTS

LED 600 spot and flood in tungsten and daylight (4 models)
It’s finally back and this time we have a tungsten flood as well. Relatively few changes but were some improvements in the 40 degree (SPOT) LEDs as far as strength of output. 10000 lux at 2 feet whereas the old 600 spot was 7200 lux at 2 feet. Flood is relatively unchanged though. The kit now comes with a filter panel set (see below for more information on that) which is also separately available for those that already have an LED 600 (check under LED Accessories category on the site). Includes: carrying case, ac to dc adapter, removable barndoors, angle adjustable stand adapter, and acrylic filter panel set.

Studio (metal) Fluorescents, dimmable and non-dimmable (6 models)
A few changes this time in our flos. We converted all the models to lighter weight aluminum instead of steel. The 6x55w for example now weighs about 16 lbs whereas it was 25 lbs. before. Quite an improvement in weight. However, its still the same great design and shape as before including our yoke which is IMO the best and sturdiest around. Barndoors are still removable as before and the eggcrate size is unchanged so our existing eggcrate models still work with the new aluminum versions.

1200w HMI Par and 575w Fresnel with new 575/1200 PFC ballast

All HMI ballasts have been migrating to power factor corrected (PFC) types so we followed suit with our one HMI ballast model that wasn’t PFC ready. All our other models like the 70w and 150w CDM ballasts and fluorescents were already PFC. Basically this means that through some special added circuitry, the ballast uses about the power you would expect given wattage and input AC voltage. Older non-PFC ballasts use more power, so for instance where a PFC 1200w ballast might be expected to use about 11 amps, a non-PFC might use 15 amps. Since our 575/1200 ballast is now PFC type so it uses about 11 amps now. Also, seems to be a bit quieter too especially during startup. No changes to 1200w par fixture but the 575w fresnel has an improved yoke with special yoke clamp which means less force is necessary to tighten them down and also will hold a load like our 1000w fresnel softbox kit which will also work on the 575w HMI fresnel. The 575w fresnel also has an improved lens design as well.

1000w Tungsten Fresnels
Like our 575w fresnel, the new tungsten fresnels now have an improved lens design and extra yoke clamp. Not even Arri compact fresnels, nor any other clone has this type of clamping device and all our future tungsten and HMI fresnels will have it. The newest 70w and 150w CDMs and 300w tungstens already had it. Just another area where we add value over other competition.

NEW PRODUCTS

CL-LED256 Spot
The LED 256 is our smaller version of the LED 600 and only available in spot configuration. ½ the size of the LED 600 its 5 x 5 x 3.25”. At almost 2 lbs. weight though, it’s not meant as a hotshoe light but rather a complement to an all LED kit to be used as a small fill, accent spot or back / hair / rim light. Light output is a bit under ½ of the LED 600. It does come with a ¼-20 mount on the bottom for our included angle adjustable baby stand adapter or whatever other favorite mounts you may have that use that well known standard. Available in spot 3200K or spot 5600K. Also available with choice of a Sony NP-F970 or Panasonic D-54S type battery plate which comes for free with the unit. Input voltage in nominally 9v (range 6VDC to 18VDC) is via either the battery plate or 4 pin XLR. Includes: carrying case, ac to dc adapter, removable barndoors, angle adjustable stand adapter, and acrylic filter panel set. Price $299.

300w, 650w and 1000w scrims
Per popular demand, we now have scrims for all our fresnels and they are compatible with other well known available similar models and clones. The 1000w also works on our 575w HMI fresnel models and a future CDM model. 650w set works on our 650w tungsten as well as the CDM 150. 300w set works on our 300w tungsten and CDM 70. We didn’t make a set for the 150w tungsten as of this time. As with all fresnel scrims, they just slide into the accessory lock behind the barndoors. Diameters of the scrims are on the site so if you didn’t buy your fresnel from us, just measure the size of your accessory holder (where barndoors go) on the front of the fresnel and see if our scrim falls in that range. Please don’t ask if it fits your model or not, we can’t be in a position to test every fresnel out there, nor do we want to be responsible with keeping up with that if they change something on their models, so that’s why the we give the dimensions which are 5”, 6 1/4” and 7 11/16” respectively. Those are very common sizes and cover a lot of models. Each set comes with its own nylon padded protection pouch and includes full single and half single scrims (standard green color code) and full double and half double scrims (standard red color code). Scrim material is stainless steel and protection edge ring is seamless anodized aluminum. Seamless rings are a nice thing because they keep the scrim thin, allowing you to put more of them in the accessory holder for more lighting cutting. I’ll stack these up with scrims from any manufacturer and they’ll last for years to come. Price $20, $24 and $30 respectively.

LED 600 acrylic filter panel set
This will be a painless way to add correction filters for the most commonly wanted types of situations where you need filters for the LED 600. It comes for free with the current LED 600 kit and is also available on the site under LED Accessories for those that already bought the LED 600 earlier before we had this. The set comes in a nylon pouch and includes ¼ minus green, ½ minus green, full CTO and prismatic diffusion. All are 1/16” acrylic so very durable. They fit behind the barndoors or if you’re not using the barndoors, they can be held in place with the spring loaded accessory locks at the top of the LED 600. Price $25.

LED 600 speed softbox kit
We’ve talked about this one a bit before. A break with the past, so to speak, in softbox design. We started down the conventional road using the existing type softbox and weren’t happy. The LED 600 is so portable and lightweight, it seems a crime to use the conventional rod mounting type softbox on it which can take so long to setup. So, I started looking at other possibilities and my softbox manufacturer and I came up with a much better design. This 24” x 24” softbox set comes folded down to a very small size and works similar to those 42” reflector discs in how it folds together and unfolds out in 3 stages. After unfolding, you simply attach it to our LED 600 speedring which fits in the accessory holder where the barndoors go today. I recommend the softbox most with the LED 600 spot version as it covers the 24” x 24” silk well and is also powerful enough to not be too watered down. The flood works of course, but for the most output, the spots are best. Includes the speed softbox, LED 600 speedring, 1 stop diffusion silk, fabric eggcrate and 2 different carrying pouches (large and small). Price $99.

CL-SFT1 speed softbox kit
We made a version of the new speed softbox for our popular CL-SFT1 kit as another option. So a newer, easier to setup version. 24” x 24” like all our other models. Includes the speed softbox, CL-SFT1 permanent speedring, 1 stop diffusion silk, fabric eggcrate and 2 different carrying pouches (large and small). Price $99.

NEXT TIME
Look for more and larger LED fixture models, a 1x55w fluorescent “modular” system, another addition to the CDM fresnel family and our improved tungsten fresnels. Thanks for looking!

looking forward to those stronger LEDS.

any eta guesstimates?

NIce.....

Thats the "2500" (actually 2592 LEDs). Its 22 3/4" x 18". So its about like just a bit more than 4 LED 600s all in one package.

The 1200 (1296 LEDs) will be 22 3/4" x 9".

Lollipop on back is mounting method for both.

Very lightweight--the 1200 weighs about 3kg (6.6 lbs). 1200 uses about 100w of power and 2500 uses 200w.

There will be a regular all daylight version of the 1200 and 2500 and a special high CRI bi-color version of each as well. The bicolor version uses two manual dimmers whereas the daylight version just one dimmer. Both have bank select switches.

As far as photometrics I'm still tuning it and not ready to announce that yet but it should be very powerful and will fight daylight in a room with lots of windows.

Yes I think they will hold up well in traveling. This is the same combination of hardshell corrugated polycarbonate and aluminum extrusions we use on our portable flos and proven well in that regard. Like any equipment that's traveling though it needs a good hard case to protect it.

Pricing to come soon.

Thanks guys. I finally got around to finishing my next LED article and its on the often misunderstood subject of Color Rendering Index (CRI) of light and how it relates to LEDs and electronic lighting in general. We'll cover the issues and the future of LEDs and how they can advance to higher CRIs in the near future.

You can find it here:

I'm reading the tech specs of the 4x55 Flo and the LED600, trying to figure out which is the brightest.

The CL-455 is just a bit brighter than the CL-LED600. 600 is equivalent to about a 650w fresnel and 455 is equivalent to about an 800w tungsten behind diffusion. Hope that helps.

Oh my god! The 2500 "Miltos" looks amazing!

The first two units you'll ship are coming straight to me ofcourse!!

Thanks Miltos. You talked me into doing that one faster than I was planning so I think you deserve to be first in line for those. Should beat the heck out of juts about any other LED fixture out there as of now.

Would the 2500 still be able to be battery powered as well?

Yes of course, I think thats one of the most important features of any LED fixture. But, at 200w though its going to really suck power right out of batteries quickly.

Good point, thanks Martin.

We're moving the power "converter" and supply guts outside of the fixture to aid in keeping weight and especially heat down. There will be an external box and it should have places on it for 4 pin XLR input where batteries of different kinds can plug in. We may consider having places for Vmount and AB mount batteries on there, but I think though that the lead acid Bescor types are what you really want for long lasting power. For instance, I would say that while a 140WH battery like our RED ones which lasts about 2:20 as I recall with an LED 600 will only last about 1/4 that with the LED 2500 or about 35 minutes. You'll want those really big lead acid types for the real power. In fact, we're planning on having two 4 pin xlr inputs on the 2500's power converter just to make it more convenient to use 2 batteries if need be. 1 4 pin xlr on the 1200. Voltage input range should be between about 10VDC to 24VDC or a bit higher even.

Ooooo - 2500! Nice, I'm looking forward to hearing all of the details when those come out. :)
