  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Newcomer looking for advice

If you are going to do an MX go red epic or red one kits it will be worth the money. go for what you need and can afford for right now or just save up for a full kit for later. I think 9G's is over the top for a scarlet MX

Why would one choose the red one mx instead of the scarlet?

I don't think I can afford an epic mx

Ive seen cheaper on red user, keep your eyes peeled, and as always, be cautious who you buy from.

A young Jedi must speak to a yoda about the Red one. If you won't train with great, how can you be come great,If you don't know great,Why are you trying to buy great. You and the great must become one...Understand you might then. Use the force Luke or you may buy wrong and go to the Dark side.

Hahaha what Aaron?

It's an honest doubt. Other than the fps options, what other benefits would I get from a red one mx brain over a scarlet-x?? Do consider this will be sitting on top of a ronin gimbal 40% of the time

Other than that, let me update the item list and price. I'll get the following:
- 2 pelican 1620 cases with custom cutouts...
- Scarlet-x w/ SSD side module (230 hours) with an aluminium PL mount (although I need EF)
- 5" Touch LCD
- DSMC Side Handle
- REDMOTE
- Outrigger handle + top handle.
- QR platform pack + QR platform (dovetail)
- Tactical Cage
- 4x 128gb SSD's + redmag reader
- 2x redvolts + 2 travel chargers
- 4x Switronix v-mount batteries + quad charger + v-mount battery adapter
- Large Dovetail
- Redrock mattebox w/ 4 flags
- Redrock follow focus + whip + rails + riser
- Sachtler 2 Stage legs + baby legs + hi-hat
- Sachtler 150mm head -- Don't know the model, but it vey much looks like an old version sachtler cine 75 head. It looks rough, but is smooooooth.

All this for $8,600 + ownership transfer

Sound better now?

I say go for an epic x or scarlett dragon these guys are selling you will get more bang for your buck.

I'd say to use your budget to get the basic you need for shooting (camera, monitor, SSDs) at the highest level you can. You can buy accessories as you go with money you get from shooting. If you spend $2000 for accessories (tripod, cases, follow focus and so on) it is $2000 you could have spent for a better camera.
Each iteration of the sensor is better than the previous. I'd buy the latest you can get. Dragon is better than MX. Epic is more camera than a scarlet.

Damn, you make a very good point.

I'll maybe go against the grain and say go for it. $8600 is a solid price for a complete kit. If you like the sticks and the head—an operator's best friends—you can keep those. The Scarlet makes great images. If you don't like it, you'll still have made some money with it and can sell it off to buy what you really want.

The one caution is if you're on a Ronin 40% of the time, you might want to look seriously at the Raven. You'll save a significant amount of weight and size which is a big deal on a rig like that.

Ignore what these people are saying. A camera that is outfitted to actually shoot is better than a camera that is to sit on the shelf because you don't have batteries or support or rigging.

That package is an incredibly good deal. Go for it.

Somethings are worth the wait. You buy old you can't resell it because everyone is on the new. Why drop 9K on an old camera when the new one is around the same. If it breaks- no warranty and you have to pay the 500.00 transfer fee on top of a maybe 3500.00 repair. You do the math. What looks and sounds good is not always good for you. research everything then buy because when you decide you get what you get. Who knows... there may be an upgrade down the line after you buy a new one but there will be non for the old ones. After I bought a Scarlet Red did a upgrade to Epic-X then to Epic Dragon now Weapon but that old scarlet is dead in the upgrade world like the red one and now Epic-x so I've heard. A lot of people got the brain then saved for the other parts unless you had a major cash flow.

The new one isn't around the same. A $9500 raven package will get you 1 mag, a touch screen, and a rear module of your choice. And that's $500 more. That Raven package won't have batteries, multiple mags, support, matte box and follow focus, cases, a side handle... For $9500 you can't even shoot with the raven because it doesn't come with an AC adapter. For the $9000 Scarlet package, you're ready to shoot anything you want.

To get a Raven package that is at the same level of usability, the OP will have to spend about $16000.

And by the way, that Sachtler looks like a 7+7 head. Those are super nice. I wish I had one.

Thanks for the info, I've been looking like crazy for that head but couldn't find anything.

And yes, this scarlet package is pretty amazing, but I'm really starting to consider waiting a bit and saving some more for an Epic-MX package.

I guess I won't all the bells and whistles that come with the scarlet, but the crop factor on that body plays nicer with my lenses and 120fps @ 5k sounds just right (specially since I watched some DISHEARTENING 120fps scarlet-x footage).

I won't have a 7 + 7 head, but my compass 25 head and my 3 stage solo sticks should do just fine for starters :)

If I can't get one in 2 months or so, I'll buy the scarlet-x

Thank everybody for their comments, truly really appreciate it.

That's probably a good call. I picked up my used Scarlet about 6 months ago, and I've been hunting deals on an Epic X ever since. They are getting incredibly cheap!

If you got the cash burn it... why ask someones opinion when all you do is shoot it down. If you want a RED camera buy it dude. Its not like you can afford anything else so man up! Why look at a benz when you only have Ford escort money.

What do you mean all I do is shoot it down? It was your advice I took after all... and so decided to look further into en Epic system.

Ahhhh ..Sorry about that i lost track, Thought Kenneth asked ...my bad. Glad I could help because others try to coach the new people into getting bum deals to help their friends make a sale.
