  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Zeiss 55mm f1.4

Thank you Patrick, have been waiting for a bit more info on this line of lenses. Bring on the end of October! Was that aperture ring you were talking about on a Canon mount?

You're welcome!

The one I held was a Nikon. The Canon was being carried around on the show floor somewhere, but from what I gathered they should look identical.

actually the markings on the lens front were in yellow, not white on the model we saw (-; it had 82mm front (at least I think that was what the 82 in the label was about) and was labeled: Carl Zeiss Distagon 1,4/55 ZF.2 •82 T*

T* was in red (-;

btw.. If they offer declicking.. could we also beg zeiss to sell an additional model with focus gearring?

I'm sure we're stuck with TLS or Duclos on that... but I guess cinemodding these isn't the worst alternative.

EDIT: but still you're right ;) we shouldn't give up hope !

have I gone colorblind? in Ketch's photo they're white.. (-;

the lower one is a Hasselblad :) the upper ones have yellow markings

EDIT: sorry, I thought you meant the barrel markings :) Guess I didn't read your post carefully enough!

"He who knows how to read has a clear advantage!"

Glad to hear Zeiss bringing back aperture rings to their canon mount stills lenses! The current price point is quite exciting. A cine mod of these sounds like it will cover all of my needs. & here I thought I was sold on the Xenon FFs. Thanks again Patrick!

Here's to hoping I'm not bringing your hopes up too high. Haven't seen the canon version so there's still a chance this is not the same. Have seen the weirdest misunderstandings in the booth talks :)

Also remember that first it's only 3 lenses and no more are really confirmed.

WHy wouldn't Zeiss themselves make these new lenses into a Cine line? Seems logical to me.

They didn't really want to comment. It wouldn't be a complete set. But if they continue making more of these... Who knows. Would be a great thing especially if they would come out under 10K a piece.

It's possible that these optics might find their way into CP.3 mechanics.

I loved the mechanics ;) The focus pull was almost cine like. Could still be a bit longer focus throw but it's not comparable to a still lens. Especially the smoothness was great.

But I know what you mean. Slap on a couple of gear rings and I'm even more sold.

Thanks Patrick for your nice update. My excitement about this lens returned (not that it was fully gone). It looks like this thing has the potential of being a affordable Master Prime.
Sad that they didn't allow pictures and samples.

BTW, why not make it a CP.2. I mean, everyone will know what this lens is, and the current 50 1.4 isn't that great anyway. They've already older designs and brand-new ones in the CP.2-line and it sounds like the other 2 planned lenses won't be out for a year or two. A CP3-line isn't going to happen before that.

Maybe call it CP.2 Master or soemthing like that. ;)

I think it's unlikely.

Zeiss's Touit lenses for XF-mount (Fuji X) have an aperture ring because X cameras are capable of setting the aperture value when aperture ring is on 'A' as well as accepting aperture value from the lens when the aperture ring is set otherwise. Zeiss's lenses for E-mount (NEX) lack an aperture ring because NEX cameras can only do the former. Zeiss could've included an aperture ring on the E-mount Touits, but it would've had to be solely mechanical (ie reporting no aperture information to the camera, crippling certain exposure modes and limiting the usefulness of EXIF data).

I believe it is for the same reason that ZF.2 have aperture rings while ZE don't. I don't know that for sure, though. Does anyone know if aperture value is reported to the camera by the EF-mount CP.2's? That would tell us.

Zeiss has published a new blog-entry about this lens:
http://blogs.zeiss.com/photo/en/?p=4260

It looks like there have been some slightly modifications, for example, the filter thread has been changed from 82mm to 77mm.

It's coming! ;)

So, who knows some people at Zeiss and can make a group-buy happen? ;)
