  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New York Film Academy- help

First timer. It's taken me 4 years at community college to get enough confidence to finally do it. If I don't get in, I have Chapman to hope for still, and then as my backup, San Francisco State since it's a 20 minute commute lol.

Its nerve racking, I know what you mean. But hopefully we will see each other in the fall at either USC or Chapman. GOOD LUCK!!! PM me if your ever in So. Lake Tahoe and want to ski or talk movies.

You can argue about not going to film schools all day long; we've all heard of the legendary Tarantino/Spielbergs who never went to film school; well that also is a minuscule amount of people in the industry. On the flip side, I'm betting there are a lot more people who tried the same thing yet became nothing after they spent every last dime to make their dream movie; would kind of suck to be that guy rather than the guy who spent that money on an education.

Low-budget shorts, man. HD. Or why not... 4K? :)

You don't need to sell your house for a "dream movie", juz make some cheap shorts, become good, prove your talent and "get your foot in the door". You acan have your shot at a feature, the point is that it's much easier now.

Noone should make a feature by making risky personal funding. The point is that you can climb the ladder by yourself now. At least the first steps. It's cheaper and resources are available.

Film school or not, there's a lot of effort to be made, and you can never cheat that - a lot of [self]education, reading, writing, trying, failing... until it happens. Actually it could be even easier in the film-school way... but not cheaper... :).

In film school, you pay for digested knowledge, they save you time and show you the right things to do and not do. Outside you gotta figure most of the stuff yourself. But it's cheaper and... more fun, IMHO. Freedom is always fun.

I'm currently still in my shorts period, and that's exactly where I belong, I wouldn't accept to direct a feature, even if someone offers me, cause I'm not there yet. Not enough experience and making my last 2-3 shorts showed me exatcly how much I do not know, so...

The good is that it's easier and cheaper now to "get on the ladder". Internet and books give you all the theory and info you need, technology allows you to make pretty acceptable stuff on a low budget.

And if you take price of shooting on film into consideration - I can make an entire feature in my country, just by saving up the cost of it. RED One gives us this for real.

Let the good times roll, buddy :).

Ok so you don't want to be a accountant...

Hi All; A story came to mind from a resourceful Russian Lady friend of my wife's
Boy, that sentence sucked! Anyway this lady(with thick accent intact after years in the states) decided she wanted to be in the movie biz. So off she went to a famous directors office. Actually, she made a appointment with the secretary. She said she was a fundraiser and would like to talk to the famous director. Yep, she got the appointment. Her pitch? She would work for the director for free! Yes free, for 6-8 months. Then a decision would be made whether she was good enough to hire. The director stunned by the offer agreed. She worked the time and was hired. That lady had guts. Oh yeah, she paid for all costs while on location too!
