We just issued a new white paper: Preparing for Final Cut Pro X.

http://silverado.cc/shop/pages.php?pageid=36

Paper talks about new RAM usage in 64-bit apps, OpenCL for GPU, and Grand Central Dispatch.

We're planning to issue a version 2.0 with test results later in the summer, so if you have feedback on the initial doc we can definitely include it.

What's the secret handshake required to download the FCPX white paper? I enter my name as requested and get the message "There was a problem with your submission. Errors have been highlighted below." No errors are highlighted or listed.

I think you have to fill in the email box, or you'll get a "Error highlighted" message.

Well, I was already logged in, but, regardless, after entering my email address in the only email address field on the page (for the newsletter) as you suggest and hitting return, I was given the same error message.

I'll PM you

Don't know what happened, but after receiving your PM'ed link, the original link to the request page is now working properly. Thanks.

This looks really interesting, thank you Torrey.

Thanks Paul--love to get your feedback. TL

Torrey - very helpful and concise. Thanks to this white paper, I know exactly where my 6 core Mac Pro stands and just exactly what I can do to improve performance with FCP-X. My current graphics card is the standard ATI Radeon HD 5770, which is on your "supported" list. Any suggestions going forward for what might do me better?

Again, thanks! :thumbup1:

Terry--we'll need to wait a little to see what happens around the time that FCP-X comes out. Evidently, Mac OS X 10.7 Lion has even more support for OpenCL cards than 10.6, so there might be a lot of options that open up that aren't available right now. TL

How much is your white paper gonna cost me Torrey?

I mean the results of reading it of course. :)

MZ--which generation is your Mac Pro? You may only need to add RAM and an updated GPU instead of getting a brand new machine.

Hi - I'm waiting for the new mac pro.. Hopefully everything will be released at roughly the same time. I mean the Mac pro, OS and Final cut.. Seems like a good pro release :)

Can I ask a small question pls Torrey.. If its not in place you dont have to answer no prob.. Any idea how the thunderbolt can improve connection to external color gading monitors example a dream color? Or will still have to rely on the Black magic converter.. Thanks

Kirk,

That is a great question. Some interesting TB observations here:

Going to DreamColor will require a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort converter. We'll need to see if the output stays 10-bit when going from the Mac to display through TB.

From what I've read, the display channel on TB is just displayport piggybacked on top of the data channels. So I would say it's a safe bet that no, TB/DP is not going to be a good choice for a critical reference monitor. It's basically the same as plugging a monitor into the DP/MDP port now, which is also not recommended.

That said, I don't have a dreamcolor, so I don't know how well it holds up to calibration/precision when hooked up via DP.

Ben--that's kinda how I've seen it, too. TL

Torrey, Do you happen to know how FCP will work with the new Epic footage? Will it be able to work with 5k footage as an R3D? Will you be able to do a 'first light' color grade like you can in AE or PR?

Thanks also for the white paper. Great work.

This is very helpful in explaining a lot about 64 bit and what my computer can and cannot do. Thanks for it.
