I was already loving what Tokina is doing with the Cinema Vista Primes (over even Zeiss Supreme Prims) and am still hoping for at least a 125mm in T1.5. That said, in the meantime, Tokina has released the "Vista One" prime set based off the original Cinema Vista but with a coating and a different look on the markings. I'd like to know anyone's thoughts or further information on this. Are there some significant advantages? Were the originals ever that “clinical” to begin with?

Look forward to seeing some A/B comparisons between the different versions. I'd also be curious to know how many surfaces of the internal elements are coated in the regular Vistas. If nothing else, this tells me that Tokina is committed to the digital cinema space - and that's only good for us.

Blair, I fully agree. I really like what Tokina has been doing and it seems this is yet another step they are taking in the right direction for cinema. I spoke with Matt Duclos earlier today. He said this is a very limited run but indicated if there is enough support for the set that its always possible that Tokina could make more sets in the future. My thoughts are that this is a limited test run to see how people respond being that apparently, some people wanted a bit softer vintage (Cooke) look out of their Vistas. But Duclos will be doing some side by side tests after NAB of the Vista One vs. the Regular Vistas. I am excited to see how they compare. I haven't been this excited about lenses since being introduced to ARRI Master Primes many years ago.

Yeah they have a chance to really hit on something

These lenses are just plain bonkers good.

(Regular ones and the ONES)

I mean, there’s a reason even Panavision invested in carrying these. They’re like... just damn good. I don’t even care about the weight. I mean, signature series are lighter because of the magnesium body, but like optically these are really insanely sweet, creamy but crisp in the right places, gorgeous draw.

My personal favorite of the Large Format spherical cinema lenses.

Here's a recent Test of the current Tokina Vista Primes.

Looking forward to the Vista 2's

Yikes... 30% more in cost due to the limited run? Maybe start this out with a Group Buy.

Remington,

You might have to wait until the Vista 4's to get a better price. :)

I saw that regarding 30% and now 40% increase for the Vista One set. I'd still pay that if I can get funding in place for a project coming up before the limited editions are sold out.

Now I wonder if they will at least release a 125mm or 135mm at T1.5 in both the Vista One and Regular Cinema Vista lineups. I know there was talk of at least a 125mm at T1.5 but I don't know how certain that is.

Here's some initial footage of how the Vista Ones perform with the single coating...

I want to see these lenses on Monstro!

Thanks Jamie for the link to the footage. I'm not sure either about a 125mm or 135mm. It would be nice you didn't have to by a whole set just the lenses you wanted. However, because of the limited numbers of lenses that will be manufactured, I can understand why that's not practical.

Tokina Vista One Single-Coated Limited Lens Set

By Personal View

Interview with Ryan Avery, Vice President of Sales of Tokina about unique offering that Tokina made. They intentionally worstened lenses coating, while keeping same excellent resolution. This allow creators to have vintage lenses look and modern lenses resolution. One sad thing is that it is one time limited batch of lenses and no one knows if Tokina will make second one ever again.

In another thread Phil Holland leaked that there's a 135mm lens on the way. I'll bet that they issue a second batch when that lens is ready for Prime Time. If I were them I'd offer initial buyers the chance to expand their 6-lens sets to 7-lenses. And I'd offer new buyers a chance to buy either 6- or 7-lens sets. Then they can make precisely the right number of 135mm lenses for those who want sets with or without.
