  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New version of Allstar dovetail plate

Anybody else bought one of these yet, and want to give a review? It looks like just the thing for me, but I'd like to hear about build quality. (Also, shipping time, given that it's coming from China.)

I have the "old" one :
Good product
Good service

Hey Johan,

Look straight down at your Euro Quick Release plate on the head. Do you see the allen head safety screw that can be accessed through the gap in the plate? Take it out and you should be able to take it off no problem.

Cheers,

Andrew

Hi,Johan
Andrew is right. You need to take the 7/64(I`m not sure) allen screw out.

Andrew,your dog so bad

Hi ALLSTAR,

Thanks man, I really liked your latest demo video, your plate looks like a great/well made solution. Very nice work...

Haha, the dog is awesome but all the credit goes to the collective of Artists known "Pleix" from Paris, France. These guys (and girls?) do incredible work. Here is their site, please watch "Birds". Absolutely beautiful.

Johan, thank you very much for the nice PM, I am always happy to help a fellow Red User.

Cheers,

stable?

stable?

How does this plate perform, stability wise? Does it lock down tightly with no wobble that you currently experience with the RED cheesplate, dovetail scenario? I really would like this as an alternative to the ARRI/E.T. option as it's a lot cheaper but i'm concerned it won't be rock solid on the stick and will wobble.:umm:

Its absolutely fine, I just received my upgraded model today. Allstar provides great service also.

:turned: Hi, I think to let users reply your question. It`s objective.

You know what he means to say....

just want to clarify, maybe it's my early morning pre-coffee brain but not sure. I'm guessing he meant so it's objective and not from him. Maybe I'll wait till I have had a coffee.
So you have found no sideways wobblin?

As others have said, this plate works great with the Red bottom plate. I never went the cheeseplate route because a) my shoulder dovetail was wobble free (though a terrible pain to get to engage properly, much less adjust for balance), and b) I had already planned on getting the Allstar dovetail as my intermediate solution before eventually upgrading to the ET/Arri gear.

It's a time saver, and as solid as they come. Forget the cheeseplate if you want to make your life easier. With the Allstar setup, my quick-release plate can live on the dovetail, without any need to move the QRP forward or backward (with the only possible exception being mounting the 24-290 Optimo); all balancing can be done between the Allstar and the bottom plate.

On a side note, though important all the same, Allstar's service is fantastic. My dovetail arrived within 3-4 days of ordering (Taiwan to NYC). Furthermore, there was a small piece that appeared damaged, and Allstar offered to swap out my dovetail for a new one without any hesitation. I had to insist that he only send a replacement piece that I could replace myself...he wanted to free me from any and all inconvenience in the process.

And for those of you wondering, the piece that was damaged was not a design flaw in any way; I think many other owners of the new dovetail will agree, this piece is very well designed.

I'll include some pictures of my first day out with my camera, using the Allstar dovetail and Red bottom plate in conjunction with a Sachtler Video 25. We were just shooting some tests, but managed to capture something neat in the process that you can check out as well...shooting with 8gb cards, 2K 2:1, 113fps, no wobble...only lack of a follow focus. Anyone got one for sale? 19mm setup.
