  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Top Plate From SmallRig

Certainly cheaper than most! I am assuming that the cut out part is to the rear to allow the fan grill to remain on the camera. If this is the case, then the front portion does cover the "radiator" fins (I assume that's what they are) nearer the front of the camera. Both the RED and WC products have cutouts for this. Not sure if it's a problem but it might be worth noting.

BTW - other issues may arise from any attempts to mix and match. Way back when I bought a Gini-rig cage for my Scarlet but the thickness and the the spacing of drillings proved to be incompatible with pieces from RED or WC. If I had been happy staying with Gini-rig only, I'd probably have been fine. In the end, I paid up and now have a completely RED set-up. Trhe tuth is, though, there may be no way to know until you buy it and try it with various other parts and pieces.

Small Rig is great. I have several of the smaller components for various rigs and are all well made and inexpensive. Recently bought from Small Rig a 1.5" NATO rail for a camera handle Cost 26.00 and is every bit as good as rails costing 3x as much. Customer service is great too. I originally ordered a 1" rail but when it arrived it didn't have safety pin. I contacted them and told them it'd cost me more to ship it back to China than what they charged me to buy it (19.00). So they sent me the 1.5" with safety pin free of charge and then changed the specs on their site for the 1". I also have several of the 15 mm to 15mm right angle clamps. I bought them because at the time no one had ratcheting knobs except Small Rig. They were less than 1/3 the price of Zacutos and every bit as well built. A year later Zacuto finally got around to ratcheting tie downs.

I used to be skeptical on all parts Chinese and Indian. In the past two years, the Chinese level of machining and materials has taken great leaps. I own a Ronin and I'd say in terms of build it has little competition. For my A7s I have a Movcam cage. No one comes close in terms of design, workmanship and performance - not to mention the great price. Indian products still have much to be desired but the label "made in China" reminds me of "made in Japan". There was a time when the latter meant cheaply made.

Would love to hear about your experience with it, if you end up making the purchase. Super tempting price point.

Took a chance. Ordered some stuff.

1 - Top Plate
2 - Leather QR Handles
3 - 100mm nato rails
1 - SWAT NATO Clamp
Total- $226

When it comes in (along with my dragon!) Ill throw up a review. If worst comes to worst then I will just bite the bullet and get Red/Wc.

I bought one for my B camera, and I have a machine shop at my disposal. It's just so cheap and it's not like it's rocket surgery to make a top plate. No complaints and I like it just fine.

i use top plate and handle. been running around with these for three months now. now issues. the bottom "spacer" does not have enough free screw holes for a large arri dowtail to fit. but works well for smaller setups
