I'm working on a parody of/homage to the Tree of Life and I need that "one" EF mount lens that will give me the perfect look of UWA master primes stopped down to t11.

It's going to be a complement to the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8, which I like. Good color rendering, sharp, contrary, adequate bokeh, good sun stars. Not wide enough for a lot of what I'm doing, though.

Lofty expectations beyond any cheap zoom's capabilities aside, I can't fully decide which lens to pair this with for these sequences. What's important is good sharpness including corner sharpness with minimal CA stopped down to t8-t16, great sunstars, good flare control, and a lack of distortion.

The 11-16mm Tokina seemed out of the question because its flares (ghosts), however cool, are too strong and a bit tacky for this type of project. The 10-18mm Canon seemed like a great choice due to the superlative optics focal length range and cheap price, but it has a seven-blade rounded aperture and for those few "sunstar" moments it will look completely wrong. I've read that the new 11-20mm Tokina is not only sharper in the corners, but also reduces flare significantly. I doubt they have matched Canon's coatings yet, but the sun stars on the Tokina were already excellent:

But those ghosts. YUCK!

Anyone have any experience? Maybe I am being too literal looking for 18-point rather than 14-point sunstars and should snap up the Canon. But the Tokina without those ghosts would be fantastic. Anyone have the Tokina 11-20mm who could try it out?

Pay my air fare and I'll bring my Master Primes :D

If I had the money I would! It's just me driving up and down the coast. For some of the pick ups, no need for an AC even at such deep stops.

That's why I'm trying to figure out a budget lens that at least sells the look. Tokina seems to have the sun stares but too much flare, Canon has good flare control but not-great sunstars.

Please don't thread dump.

The Zeiss ZE 2.8/15 is pretty awesome and one of the best UWA-primes in the stills-world. Best UWA-zoom in the Canon-world is the Canon 4.0/11-24 L. I would start with those two. But there are lots of options available. That Tamron 15-30/2.8VC is an interesting alternative to the Canon 16-35/4.0IS and there are some other wide primes, for example a 2.8/10mm (APS-C) from Rokinon.

The 11-24mm does seem very nice. 9 bladed aperture that has good sun stars stopped down.

The others are not quite wide enough and they're all must too expensive. Hadn't considered the Rokinon.
