Hey guys I'm new to the forum and I've been reading a few of the posts and I have a few questions. I am a young indie filmmaker who is breaking into directing for motion picture. I want a camera that is reliable and can give me the look that I want, to shoot my shorts, or indie features that is cost efficient but will deliver on amazing results. I'm sure some questions can't be answered until more information is released by Red, but here goes.

1:
Will the Scarlet 2/3 fixed zoom, have a considerable film look? Meaning If I shoot it at 24 fps and manipulate some settings during pro or post, will it look considerably like images I've seen out there performed by red one. Does it look like film in every frame rate? Meaning in a film camera if I crank up the the frame rate it still has its chemical film look. Is this the same for the Scarelet? I know that obviously the sensor is smaller and the lens plays a big part but for an indie filmmaker is this a viable option to have?

2:
When is this camera rumored to be out? Is there a waiting line? Will I be able to purchase one as soon as it comes out? What has red said about this?

3:
Does red offer insurance for your camera? And I don't mean a warranty, I mean if that camera were to be stolen, dropped etc is there a service I can pay monthly to insure my camera for full replacement? Or where could I find such insurance companies cuz lets face it even tho it may be priced at $3.7K for a young filmmaker thats an investment you want to protect!

4:
What would it's compatibility be for a Mac system? And not Intel based, I mean a a powermac G5 with 2, 1.8 ghz processors 4 gigs of ram, and a decent invidia video card. Also Sporting the latest final cut studio and adobe cs3 production premium (in order to do compositing in AE for example)

5:
Will it feature downloadable updates and free firmware as the red one does?

6:
How good will it rival say against an HVX, (I'm sure it smokes that camera) But what I'm interested in is easy workflow and achieving a very convincing film look and simple workflow to be able to composite with.

I know that there may be a lot of questions that may have been posted before, or may seem stupid, I just want to be very well informed by the LATEST information, sometimes I read posts and the information has changed very rapidly. Thanks and hope to hear from you guys soon.

welcome to the forums rob. i too am a young film maker looking into the scarlet 2/3 for independent films. i've been lurking here for a little bit and i'll try to answer your questions to the best of my ability, but the truth is there isn't a lot of info out there yet about these cameras so some things are speculation.

1. the scarlet should have a film look, though less to the charecteristics of 35 mm film and more to 16 mm film. If you want to see some footage taken on a 2/3rd you should watch the izzy footage in the recon section of the forums. we don't know much about the fixed lens itself, but it will most likely produce a great picture, i wouldn't expect less from red.

2. i'd place my bets on it coming out early 2010, and from what jim has said there won't be a waiting list, but current red one owners will get first crack at purchasing the camera.

3. i doubt red offers insurance on the camera, but a buddy of mine has a sony ex1 and he has it insured by the same company that insures his car, and it is covered for accidental damage and theft. i think its like 15 a month or something like that. so check with your insurance company and find out if you can set up a policy for the camera.

4. from what i know right now you basically need an intel system. though i'm sure there are ways around this, it might just be a matter of encoding the footage to a format that can be used on that machine.

5. all signs i believe point to yes?

6. i don't know anything about the HVX but red is currently becoming more and more recognized and as such the workflow is becoming easier and easier. by the time scarlet comes out, who knows what the workflow will be like.

anyways, i hope this helped. my suggestion to you is to lurk on this board and the recon board, and you will learn a great deal in a very short amount of time. anways welcome to the forums, you can hang your coat over there, and leave your shoes by the door cause you'll probably be here awhile

4: there is no compatibility with non intel macs as far as red supplied software goes. I can't say for sure with Monkey extract or crimson or something third-party, but I highly doubt it, since I'm pretty sure they're all based on the RED SDK.

5: I see no reason the the policy wouold change with Scarlet, so I'll go with a 99.9% sure yes.
