New to Red One, some basic questions...

Hi to all,

With the new prices, Will soon join the RED Family, next week will buy a red one, but don't know a few thinks about the red one cameras...

I have read in the last two weeks a lot of information in the REDUSER forum, but still have some questions to solve.

Want to buy 2 (4 or two more LI230L-R) of the "new" globalmediapro LI190BS-R battery, and dual charger, this battery can split in two 95 Wh for air travel.

Can you please tell me if I must use a RED BACKPACK QUICKPLATE, RED QUICKPLATE or can use some of the Globalmediapro V-mount accessories?

If I can use the globalmedia accessories, whish one you recommend, what about cables for V-mount and camera connection?

Last questions, do you know if I can use the globalmediapro charger to directly charge the red one with two batteries connected, like the RED CHARGER? if so, which power cable should I use?

The Globalmedia pro batteries themselves should work fine. You will still have to have a RED Quickplate or RED Cradle to connect the battery to the R1 camera. I don't think that the Globalmedia accessory plates can do that. It also doesn't look like the Globalmedia charger can directly power the camera via AC power while simultaneously charging two batteries like the RED Charger can (at least I think that's what you were asking?).

Just another questions, for a start kit, do you think the following parts are enough:

- Red one MX;
- AC power adaptor;
- Red Station 18";
- 2x RedMag 64Gb;
- Red Nikon Mount;
- Red Quickplate;
- 2x 190 Globalmediapro;
- Dual globalmedia pro charger;
- Nikon lens;

Rail components and plates, etc, will try to buy used in the "stuff for sale" thread, do you have any suggestion for the this components?

Do you think that red drives are a good less expensive option? do the drives drop the frame rates, or I can still use all frame rates available at all resolutions?

Humberto, that looks like a pretty good list to start. There are lots of good deals available in used accessories. In general I'd try to stick to RED brand accessories...they are well made and are designed specifically for use with the R1...although ET, WC, Action Products, and other companies make great products too.

The RED drives are a great media option, offering very long record times for low cost. They shouldn't really drop frames, however it is important to remember that they contain spinning hard drives, so are more susceptible to vibration and handling than the SSDs are. We use a combination of SSDs and RED Drives...the SSDs make the camera much lighter and more portable when using handheld or moving around a lot, but the RED Drives are great for longer interviews or events where the camera is on tripod and not being moved around as much.

I forgot LCD and EVF, I will use the Red One for Wildlife, do you think I can use the ZACUTO PRO EFV or the Alphatron EVF-035W-3G, do they have enought resolution for focus? one of this two option can help me save a lot of money for other stuff, cause I can use them as an EVF or LCD.
If I buy the BOMB EVF probably will also have to buy a 5" RED LCD, this option will be a lot more expensive...

I have heard good things about the Zacuto EVF, but have never used one...not familiar with the Alphatron. We have the Bomb EVF and it is great, but not cheap. The older, original RED EVF is much larger but a lot of people actually prefer it to the Bomb. They are available in the used market. And remember the RED LCD for the R1 is not the current 5.0" touch monitor used on the Epic/Scarlet, but either the 5.6" or 7" LCD (with no touch screen)...these are both available pretty reasonably in the used market. One of the big advantages of the R1 over the E/S is that it can run an EVF along with a RED LCD, and still provide HDMI and HD-SDI output...all simultaneously with no extra modules or add-ons required.

Purely from a cost perspective, the CF module is attractive because (a) CF media is significantly cheaper than Redmag SSDs (eg., $500 for 128GB CF vs $1250 for 128GB Redmag); and (b) CF readers are nearly free vs $195 for a Redstation. The CF media would also have less weight. What's your take? Thanks!

CF's are a lot less expensive, but of course they hold less. I believe you have to use RED-branded CF cards...you can't use most 3rd party CF cards (although I think some Lexar will work)...and I think the largest size RED card is 16GB. Also, even the RED-brand CF cards have limitations in data rate (REDCode) that they can record because of the read/write speed of the media...for example you can't record REDcode 42 (the highest data rate).

Today you can get a 256GB CF card for only $1k! Do you know of anyone who tried using non-Red CF media in their Red One?

Plenty of people have tried it...you get an error message that says something like "unsupported media".

Hi, I'm doing a similar setup.

So it's understood that the charger wont both power the camera AND charge batts simultaneously.

But nevertheless, should the charger work fine as an AC adapter for powering the cam directly off a wall outlet? And could you also power the camera directly from the batteries that are docked there on the charger(with the appropriate xlr to lemo cable). For me the latter point would be a temporary fix for battery-powered location shoots until my actual v-mount plate arrives. In that case, I would just hang the charger w/ batts from the tripod and tether it directly to the r1 mx.

I always attach my RED Bricks to either the Quickplate or Cradle I've got mounted on the camera...never tried anything else...I think that is how most people rig the R1.
