  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Timescapes Timelapse: "Mountain Light"

Well when I have some time we could meet up and test the two lenses if you wanted to. I thought you had the 24mm mk2.

Thanks, Drew. I'd be curious to compare your 24 M2 to my 24 M1. I hear that the M2 owns it at 1.4, but might have more vignetting. M2 has less CA, I think. I think you will be stoked with the pure visual awesomeness of that 24 + 5D2 5.6K RAW.

I had to ditch that EF 16-35 II because the vignetting at 2.8 was ridiculous. I might go back to the Nikon 14-24 or try to get an EOS-converted Contax Zeiss 17-35.

very beautiful , almost made me cry ..

Great stuff.

Btw... How's your shutter holding up and how many actuations has it racked up?

How do I check that, Luis?

I am also curious.
150k Clicks isn't that much when you timelap your 5D
Is it better to do the timelaps in Liveview mode?

It's better in the sense that the camera does not have to use the power to raise and lower the mirror. It also saves the general trauma of mirror slap. Much quieter shooting. As long as your intervals are short, I believe that Live View saves a ton of battery power. I doubt it has much affect on the shutter life, however.

Thanks Tom
Wonder if swapping the shutter on MKII is something affordable, and actually done by Canon.
Great stuff from you once again, Love your work!

I've been told it's only a couple hundred bucks to replace the shutter. I hope so :)

Damn, Tom. You've outdone yourself with this piece. Truly awe inspiring.

It's amazing to me how, watching this, I feel both insignificant, dwarfed by the grandeur of the universe, and at the same time blessed to be alive and able to experience a tiny fraction of it.

Somebody give this man some money so he can make a feature-length timelapse film!!!

I think a feature could be done relatively cheap if Tom took his time with it. But if he wanted to get it done in the next 6-8 months I think it would take some cash. But of course what the hell do I know about making a feature. What I do know is that with some careful planning and some trips in just the US a very good timelapse feature could be done. Of course it would be nice to travel to different countries but I think there's plenty of beauty in the US.

I've been watching your work since 'Learning to fly.' Just mind-blowing. Beaucoup kudos.

I assume it's the sensitivity of the full frame high res sensor (and the clear desert air) that's letting you get starlight during daytime. I've never seen that before. From anyone. You're in the groove. Many thanks.

"Mountain Light" made the front page of Digg this morning. It's the first time for one of my videos:

Just an update.... someone has potentially stepped up to fund and produce my first film, although it's not a done deal yet, by any means. For me, that would be a dream come true. That person actually found me through Reduser..... so you never know who is watching. :yesnod:

The title will change from "These Short Days" to something else. Maybe "Southwest Light"....? I'm trying to think of something evocative and beautiful, perhaps tied to the iconic American Southwest region where this particular film would be shot. Any suggestions?

I'm also looking at more abstract titles based on native American languages like Anasazi, Navjo, Paiute, Apache, etc, although I'm not sure how marketable those names might be. I can still barely pronounce "Koyaanisqatsi"... :)

Tom, congrats man! That is awesome. Look forward to seeing your new stuff, I love that area.

As far as titles... I would start thinking of how you feel when you are in the southwest or the textures of the area, the "solitude", etc.

BBC Series "Life"

BBC Series "Life"

Hi Tom,

I just saw the episode of the BBC series "Life" and wondered if the opening segments were by you. Especially the timelapse which moves around the tree and the one with the stars.

They look very similar to your work. And your part of the world.

As usuall you have blown me away. I teach two video production classes at my local community college and I showed my students some of your work and they loved it almost as much as I do.

Keep up the good work, I think we will see your work in a IMAX theater sooner rather than later.

Thank you, guys. Anthony, the BBC clip will not play outside the US. I don't think my clips were used in LIFE, but I suppose they could have bought them as stock.

DRappazzo, I definitely have my mind on IMAX these days.

BTW, I have officially secured secured funding for the film now and am hoping to make an announcement in the next couple of weeks, including the launch of a behind-the-scenes blog where I hope to offer unprecedented access to the film as it is being made.
