New subforums for 'other workflows'

As solutions begin to appear would it not be appropriate for the different manufacturers to have their own sub-forums within 4K workflow, specifically

Filmlight / Baselight
Digital Vision / Nucoda
Quantel
SGO / Mistika
IFX / Piranha

(so I don't keep having to search 'other workflows'!)

You should also add Iridas. They are in beta testing for R3D support.

As you probably know, the RED SDK is a work in progress that takes time. The main workflow used today are transcoding R3D to DPX standard (with or without the SDK, using the RED software) wich is a well known format and that all solutions you cited take care of.

But yes it would be nice to see what every developper offers about R3D workflow.

Workflows using SDK and those that don't

It might be good to divide the "list" of workflows into those that use the SDK for native R3D reading, and those that use REDCINE et. al. to convert the R3D files into TIF, DPX, etc. to operate on.

I do not see any reason to support the SDK right now since REDCINE does a good job of converting the R3D files into TIF files for use in my programs workflow. If REDCINE's output directory and path are adjusted to output 8 digit filenames directly into my programs project structure image folders there is little time penalty since if my programs were converting the R3D into TIF or my 48bpp NIP type it would take about as long or longer than it does for REDCINE to put them there. What you want to avoid it to bulk convert the R3D into one directory then have to copy and rename each shot later since that can increase the time required by weeks for a feature film...

I do see a need for more than just a Search here on REDUSER to find information on workflows and other subjects.

Some ideas:

A) Let the person who starts a thread edit the posts from that thread into a Wiki page that would be put in a new Wiki page section of REDUSER with the Wiki pages arranged alphabetically by subject like an Encyclopedia of RED information. In this way the person that starts a thread can revise and delete information others have added to the thread that is copied to the Wiki page to make it more concise. The Wiki page would have a link back to the thread that the information for that Wiki page was drawn built in so you could read the un-edited posts in order if you wanted to see the un-edited text.

B) Let people who start threads add subject headings for a master subject index. Many times when looking for information the Search does not find what you want or you do not know exactly what word to search for, but if you can scroll through a subject index and click on each subject to go to a post in a thread then you can stumble on the right key words to identify the idea you are looking for. Now the threads have names, but much of what is in the thread has little to do with the title of the thread. So if in a subject index you can have several subject headings for a post, not just one, like a keywords list, for that post it would be easer to find it. This is what Search should do automaticly, but being able to see ALL the subject keywords, and having the keywords assigined to the post by the author and or the thread starter would enable people looking for a subject to scan the subject keyword list for all posts in alphabetical order.

I had someone PM me about my workflow, even though I have several posts about it here already, but it seems few if any would go through all my posts to see if they could find the information since I have almost 400 posts, and maybe 10 are about my workflow. I did not mind the PM, when people contact me it helps me know what sort of DOCs they require, but most people would give up looking rather than PM because they might feel uncomfortable asking for some help or feel they would be bothering me.

Google can be a help if you search for a subject and author at the same time, but if the author of a thread could "filter" the posts into something that is just direct information relating to the RED cameras it would speed up finding up-to-date "facts" rather than doing a great deal of sifting.

Workflows are a complex subject since unlike in the old days when most films were going to 4th generation 35mm print there are many sources of image files, and many ways to process them, and many result formats. So maybe in addition to workflow subjects, there should be an index of workflows based on result format, source images, and type of image processing? The full list of programs used to get from "Point A to Point B" would be different for each goal set, and so would the flow chart.
