NEW 64bit STORM PUBLIC BETA LAUNCHED TODAY!

IMPORTANT: Please read the Release Notes available on the Foundry's website to see the issues that this latest build addresses.

STORM assists RED Digital Camera workflows. It's quick and easy to navigate allowing producers, directors and editors to view takes in high resolution without interruption or delay.

We’re taking the unusual step of making the STORM beta publicly available because we want to get feedback from the widest audience possible. We want to know how STORM fares in different production environments and to hear your views.

So...try it, break it , tell us what's missing and help us build a great product.

NB: This is a beta release and, therefore, not perfect. Please be cautious and don't rely upon it in production.

If you have a Red Rocket card you WILL need to update the Drivers and Firmware to v1.3.5! If you don't, the card will not be detected. If you choose not to upgrade the Drivers and Firmware you can continue to use Storm Software Mode.
This is the first 64bit version of Storm so be aware it may exhibit different issues from the previous 32bit versions. We're very keen to hear your feedback.
Disclaimer: Exercise caution if you are currently using your machine for a production!

STORM 1.0v1b4 is available for download here:

http://www.thefoundry.co.uk/products/storm/try/

...and is FREE to use until the 1st March 2011. STORM requires a Mac Pro, MacBook Pro or iMac with at least 2GB RAM running Snow Leopard. If a RED ROCKET card is fitted, STORM will use it to speed up processing of R3D material.

What's new in Storm since the last Beta Release:

New Features

• Integration of the RED SDK 3.2 is complete, providing enhanced RED capabilities including support for RedColor2 and RedGamma2. As a result, you must have the RED Rocket 1.3.5 Drivers and Firmware installed before you can enable RED Rocket cards.
• You can now create RMD files by right-clicking either the Effects Stack you want to save, or the clip itself in the media pool, and selecting  Clip Options > Save RMD. There is also an option to automatically save RMD files in Preferences > General.
• Storm has been transitioned from 32-bit to 64-bit, increasing processing speed.

Feature Enhancements

• You can now render output in the background using the new Export Queue, allowing you to continue working during export.
• You can now drag-and-drop Tags, Effects, and Looks directly on to Timelines as well as Viewers.
• Storm now displays anamorphic R3D files correctly and automatically detects 2:1 clips during export. You can choose whether or not to preserve the aspect ratio.
• The metadata exported along with EXR and DPX formats has been improved to include fields such as creator, framerate, and creation time.
• Histogram and Waveform Out of Range warnings are now user definable in the Storm > Preferences > Scopes menu. You can set the Black and White points individually in the range 0-1. Bear in mind that any changes you make are only applied after restarting Storm.
• Timeline hide and lock functionality has been improved to handle undo operations more gracefully.
• The functionality of the Lift Gamma Gain effect has been improved including reset buttons for individual controls and multiple control scheme selection.
• Euphonix control surface functionality has been improved and added to Storm Preset effect creative grade tools.
• You can now select all effects in the Effects Stack quickly using the cmd + A hotkey.
• You can now change the Viewer to full screen 1:1 using the cmd + Shift + F hotkey.
• Storm colour effect Range dropdowns are now broken down into separate Hue, Saturation, and Luminance graphs to give you more control.

Will the new REDROCKET driver have any known issues with RCX if upgraded? Or is this unknown territory as well?
thanks.....

Hi Johnny, I'm not sure to be honest. Probably best to check with RED. If in doubt, don't upgrade the Drivers/Firmware just yet.

thanks,
Dan

Great list of updates. Installing it right now.

Dan,
just checked my build and it is 1.3.5.....for some reason i thought this was a Foundry build for rocket.....anyway, that is not an issue now since i'm running that build anyway. Got it...and it runs smoothly. so now back to Storm.

thanks

ROCKET MONITORING PROBLEM:
last two builds i have the same problem. Now using this new build 4....same issues.
So, if i double click a clip, it goes to the viewer, i then have to enable my rocket card monitor--done. Works fine with this clip.

Now, double click another clip, it loads to viewer, hit play,....and it plays in viewer, but not on my monitor i'm viewing from my rocket out.

SO....if i go back into ROCKET....and look at my rocket monitoring....it has changed (on the new clip) it always wants to go back to 1280x720, 8 bit 50fps....even when i set it at 1920x1080 12bit 29.97....So, if i make changes back to what i want...1920x1080, 12bit, 29.97....the clip begins to play in my monitor. But every clip seems to react this way for me when using my RR monitor out.

It would seem there should be a way to lock my preferences on the monitor or they should be locked when i go and set them and stay that way until i manually change them at a later time.

NOTE: this behavior is erratic. sometimes i have to manually change RR monitor settings and sometimes it works. Also, if i load up to 4 clips, the clip just shows up BLACK....i have to go and delete clips from above the viewer to get it to show up at all. But when only 2-3 clips loaded then seems to be ok, anymore...and just goes black in viewer.

ok, check all of the above...i upgraded to b.4....but when booting i was still on build 2...so those are all build 2.

Now using Build 4. Rocket just does not work...or rocket monitor out. I setup the monitor, 1920x1080; RGB, 12bit @ 29.97

click OK, and monitor is not active and ROCET emblem is not enabled. So can't get rocket monitoring to even work on build 4.

Hi Johnny, can you download the 1.3.5c drivers from the link on our download page? Without them the card won't be detected I'm afraid.

I tried the Monitor Output here with b4 and it's working correctly. Let me know how you get on.

many thanks,
Dan

1.3.5 and frimware 1.1.10.2 -- works for monitor out of red rocket.

.....However, still have issues when loading a new clip. For whatever reason i have to go back and reset RR monitor settings back to 1920x1080; 12bit; and fps. It seems to be consistent when going to a new clip now. So each clip i have to reset my RR monitor.

Hi Johnny, thanks for the info, we have now logged this as issue: 15973

Hi

Thanks for the update, however the export speed is still a major issue for me. While using Redrocket i am still not seeing the the "rocket speed" out of storm unlike Redcinx.

Cheers
