Hi in 2011:)
will there be a "slower" ssdmag
with "normal" price for offloading
Media mobile and in hotelrooms etc.
via redstation..?!

Hi Noah,

What would be the advantage over just using regular SSD 2.5" drives in the 2.5" reader?

Personally I'm just going to stick with offloading to a fast raid 5,

BTW, Jim has stated that a two tier media approach isn't a direction they want to head.

Cheers,

Steve

Noah, Red offer the 2.5" Red Station module so you can use any off-the-shelf 2.5" SATA laptop drive to transfer to. Perfect for those on the move or who need to move data (say from set to post house via Fedex). However, your data is crucial. RAIDs and LTOs are the way to go for actual backup of the data. If I were dumping my data to nothing but bare HDDs I would never sleep.

ah ok - so we can use nonRed ssds with the 1,8 redstation??? (for backup)

No, you use off the shelf 2.5 HDD/SSD with the 2.5 redstation. Much cheaper.

The REDstation 2.5 unit accepts STANDARD (non RED) off-the-shelf 2.5 inch drives.

(You don't have to use it to off-load your media. It's just an idea that the folks at RED like, so they made a unit you can buy for that purpose.)

The REDstation 1.8 unit accepts 1.8 inch drives that have been enclosed in a proprietary RED casing called the "REDMAG".
This is the new media option that will be used in place of the current RED drive or Compact Flash Card. The new REDMAG is expensive but it shares the best qualities of both of the old formats.

You could off-load your media to another 1.8 REDMAG but that would be pointless as there will not be a "slower" cheaper version of this product.

The purpose for the proprietary casing has been explained in many previous threads.

...hope that helps.
