  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Sony or RED...no brainer. No Brainer.

This is the exact opposite of reality. The big thing now is that the giants (Canon, Sony, and presumably Panasonic) have been awakened. They are going to steam roll out products that are 4k, 6k, 8k+ in months, not the years in which it took RED. You know how RED says, 'the other guys make you buy new cameras every year'? That's true, so imagine those incremental increases every quarter in a new camera... that's what's going to happen but with 4k, 6k, 8k, etc. You can't put the Genie back in the bottle.

Of coarse I am speaking specifically of the development of the digital cinema camera to date, not all of Sony's accomplishments throughout its company history. An so far I believe RED has paved the way for price point, quality and resolution. The point I am making here is that, in my opinion, I will not be heading out to pick up the next best thing and believe that RED has the momentum to keeps its users ahead of the curve.

I am not relating at all to the art form and artistry of motion images. All due respect to Sony and the art form. Looks like an amazing camera Sony, and the others, will put out. I am personally happy with the trend, workflow, and momentum of RED as a company.

I think everyone got nervous cause as professionals we all have a huge investment tied up in our gear. No one want their equipment to be old news, but I knew a guy a couple years ago that was a very successful DP for the medical/pharmaceutical industry that did internal videos for all the big companies, on dvx100. His lighting was great, his composition was great, and the client was very happy with his product. This was 2010. I am not sure what he shoots now, but it didn't matter what camera he had. He was a good shooter. Period.

We shouldn't forget that's what we are selling. Not the camera.

(Says the guy with all his gear in his signature.....)

Miss you mr. Civan...lets grab a pint while I am in the city. Post of the day.

Hmmmmppp. Who told you that?????? look up and open your eyes... RED is still a baby compare to Sony when it comes to technology. Sony is a Giants Company.....

Maybe I could be wrong or possibly missed something the last few years of the development of digital cinema cameras. What camera, with the exception of the new announcement, has Sony released with the same price point and of the same quality?

You have read that I am not talking historically I assume. If they have released a 4k cinema camera in the last few years in the same price point please let me know. I am currently un aware of it.

my eyes are open...no need to be rude my friend.

Both the F5 and F55 have interchangeable lens mounts (just like the F3), the cameras use Sony's positive-locking FZ mount, which has an 18mm flange depth, and already has a dozen different lens mounts that can be used with it.

Ooops, I guess I missed that detail... Either way, I think my other points stand on their own.

I'm detecting a possible language barrier. Cesar seems focused on the relative sizes of the companies rather than recent innovation or pioneering of a new industry segment.

Tough decision for me. Should I TRADE my Sony BVW-400A (paid $45,000) and BVW-D600 (paid $60,000) to Sony for the new cameras - OR - keep these cameras and get a substantial discount on a new Sony camera purchase. I retired from the biz 6 years ago because I wasn't about to spend 150K on a sony HD tape camera. Saw RED at NAB - and got back into it! Honestly - if RED hadn't come out with the RED ONE we'd all be shooting on tape or DVD's. And paying a small fortune for the latest and greatest camera that would be obselete in 6 month.

+1...and for sure in maximum 2K.
I`m for sure not swapping over to "Sony´s Alexa" just because it has a built in ND...as far I can see it is the only (nice) new detail they add to the 4K world.

I am not buying any more cameras. After the stress of this price drop, I am sticking to renting. I'll let somebody else worry about what sells for what on ebay or what next week's price plunge will suddenly be. The camera makers of the world have lost me as a paying customer. I'm sure I am not alone.
