An interesting statement from Hirai-san:

Sony is also drawing on its comprehensive strengths in audio and visual technologies to aggressively promote the growth of "4K" technology, which delivers more than four times the resolution of Full HD. Incorporation of Sony-developed technologies, such as image sensors, image processing compression LSIs and high-speed optical transmission modules into its professional-use and high-end consumer products will pave the way for Sony to continue to expand and enrich its 4K-compatible product lineup.

Note that Sony is still a $30 billion company. I wouldn't count them out just yet.

And I'll add, an extremely compliant government/banking regime in Japan that makes the GM bailout here look positively pathetic. Sony ain't going anywhere.

If you're gonna bet the farm, might as well place your bet on the correct horse.... in this case, Sony has bet wisely on 4K!

At least Sony is diversified. While consumer products is down, they've got both Men in Black and Spiderman coming out this summer (the former shot on film, the latter shot on Red Epic), and if they do as well as expected, they'll be doing OK.

Note that the whole consumer electronics business is doing so badly, some industry analysts are predicting Best Buy could fold in the next year or so. These are tough times.

And yet Apple and Samsung are kicking ass up and down the block....

Sony is right to bet the farm on 4K. I seemed to have said that back in 2005.

Now it is up to Arri to join the fray.

Now... Sony just has to make a 4K RAW camera that is affordable. What is taking them so long?

We welcome all the companies that see 4K delivery as the future...

These are the two companies Business Schools should be deconstructing - huge yet able to dominate and grow in mature industries

Maybe they'll have to recover that 6.4 billion loss from 2011 first and don't know how to do it. I got all my RED tools, (missing a few accessories) now I need a script, or two.

Not anymore, just 17.4B now.

Market Cap (market value of the company)

They are trading at the same share value as in 1988. ($17 per share)

And they just posted 6B losses.

If I have to bet on any horse I will bet on red one :-)

Where does it say "Sony is betting the farm"? Please show me word for word or I'll take the press sentence you're referring to.

Sony is going into 4K, but that is amongst many other areas as well as retooling their business model.

They are more or less continuing the same corporate plans they have had for several years now. Nothing has changed. They have to say things a certain way to promote the idea of progress and radical change to save face. I've followed Sony for years and this is nothing noteworthy or a direction change. It's just business as usual.

I wonder where will be the SONY graph 5 years from now?

I hope Sony is serious about 4K. Processing tech, proper interconnects, etc are all needed parts of the ecosystem and RED can only do so much so fast. Sony may not be the investor darlings they once were but in the broadcast space they are still huge and SR is still the premium deliverable.

The press release may be more about convincing the markets that Sony has a bunch of profit making tech in development than anything else. That said, if you were playing poker with Sony's hand in 2012 what cards would you play? 3D? - try bringing that up in the Sony boardroom. LCD panel sales? - That's gone. Better DSLR's than Canon & Nikon? Good luck. Consumer camcorders? Have you seen the Flip or the iPhone4S? Tablets? Good luck beating Apple at that. All low margin businesses with lots of competition.

Perhaps we will be the beneficiaries of Sony's need to pull a rabbit out of a hat and they will in fact aggressively pursue 4K as their potential salvation. Whether it works or not, it could really accelerate 4K development. How nice does that sound :-)

Cheers - #19
