  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Sony Blueray Encoder?

It's software. This is the latest version of what the big authoring facilities are using to master their BD content.

What's the $40,000 advantage of this software over Adobe Encore?

Well, I couldn't tell you right off the bat without trying the Sony software but Adobe Encore is intended for the lower-end of the video business while the Sony stuff is for the replicators and authoring houses. If I had to take a guess, I'd say it has all sorts of freaky deaky encoding settings that only the most demented video compressionist would know how to use but it looks like Sony has just lumped Blu-Ray and DVD encoding together to offer a single solution which may be another factor in the price in addition to the fact that it has Sony's name on it. I can certainly ask a few folks and see what they have to say about it.

I'd take x264 over that. :)

Are these people crazy?

Or it's like Obi Wan Kenobi says:

Who's the more foolish: The fool, or the fool who follows him?

Encore's compression for BluRay is MPEG2 only and, to be as blunt as possible, just plain sucks. You can get superior results with Apple Compressor using h.264 and then running those files straight through Encore. And even that is still only just OK for quality.

$40K is a lot for the independent and small boutique. But for any replicator or authoring facility, it's not a big deal. A professional mastering / authoring facility buying this isn't any different than a production studio spending $40K or more on a camera system.

I always wonder why high end compression is so much better. For example, how does Apple make the awesome HD movie trailers that stream in almost realtime? That compression seems way cleaner than anything I can get out of compressor.

They start with the highest quality material (D5 tapes) and use several different programs to process the video before encoding the final product but they don't do anything you yourself can't do given the right knowledge and setup. The realtime streaming has more to do with the network host than the encoding itself.

Icky- this is what a monopoly on tech/software causes. The moment another Blu-Ray authoring package appears can't come too soon. And yeah- Encore sadly is not a great alternative worth taking IMHO.

I think one can achieve wonders with the x264 thing if he knows how [note: I don't].

For example, you can encode each scene separately, with different settings, custom matrix, etc., then mux all the outputs in a single stream.

There are a few x264 wizards on the net, which know these things.

Encoding is an art, it seems, but thing is that you have to start with the best possible source, as wise people already said.

Most disciplines that are considered art or magic are largely misunderstood or not understood by those who consider it so. Encoding isn't an art, it's just that very few people are knowledgeable about it make themselves feel better about their lack of knowledge by calling it an art.

We also tend to grossly over pay for those things we consider art, since we don't know any better.
