  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

new Sony 4K

It's an interesting camera, sort of inevitable if you think about it, it's a bit like the 4k version of the first Sony HDV camera which means that the camera to look out for will probably be the inevitable 4k EX1 which would presumably have a 1/2inch sensor which makes it curious that it's not a 3-chip camera, I guess they've decided that the resolution of the sensor is so high that aliasing is no longer an issue.
I guess being red user people will scoff at the small sensor size but this seems to be a run and gun camera aimed at making 4k television more of a reality.

It seems OK for a 7lb with lens camcorder. Lens can't be removed. It does have a 1/2 " sensor I think.
The nice thing is that it looks like it shoots 10 bit video at 500 megabits. That means you can still do a bit of color correction to the footage.
The YouTube UHD sample looked sharp on my UHD monitor.

Well, the footage looks very sharp. I like that... 10 bit 4:2:2 at 50mbps is pretty good. Up to 60fps is good. Price is even better. Looks like a great way to get people in the 4K game in a wider range of applications. Smart move if you ask me. Sure we will see reality tv pick up these cams as a cheap upgrade to 4K... Bring on the 4K content!!

Well, the porn industry is definitely gonna be all over these since they like that "live" look and the price is just right.

The Z100 records at a bit rate similar to the Scarlet:
XAVC Recording Format at 4K 50p/60p, 4:2:2 10-bit at 500/600Mbps, HD at up to 223Mbps

FS700 about to take a hit.

Thank you very much

You'll need to elaborate on this quite a bit as they are quite different cameras, how will this make the FS700 take a hit exactly.

Records 4K internally whereas the FS700 needs the external module or recorder to capture 4K (Extra Cost). It is also only 8 bit internal recording vs this new model which is 10bit internal. Other than sensor size and lens options the new model seems like it will capture some of the FS700 market and more in general considering it's cheaper entry price to 4K. Weddings, porn, reality tv, live events, corporate films will really dig this camera...

While the FS700 will remain a superior choice for many folks, I do agree with the assertion that there are a decent number of people who will choose the Z100 as a cheaper alternative. Sony has been the king of market segmentation for years but the competitive landscape has evolved. FWIW, if you want to do UHD/4K with a Sony camera you've got the Z100 (or FDR-AX1 variant), FS700, F5, F55 and F65. In my world, I'd see the Z100 as a great option for projects with limited budget and the F55 for more serious stuff. But wouldn't you rather have a DRAGON ;-)

Cheers - #19

Except that you are forgetting the aesthetic differences that will come into play when selecting an FS700 or one of these cameras, if you are an event shooter perhaps you will go for this camera to get 4k on a smaller sensor as it's easier to focus, on the other hand perhaps the larger sensor size and superior slow motion capability will make them decide that the FS700 the better choice even if it means sticking to 1080p until you get a job where maybe you could just rent the 4k recorder, it is RAW though so it wouldn't be able to record as much on a card as the new Z100 which uses Sony's new format.
It's not dead certain that this will be overly damaging to the FS700.

I'm not forgetting, I mentioned the difference in sensor size. But for most that the camera is aimed at will not care. Plus I don't think 8 to 16 second bursts of slow mo are anything to spend extra on unless you really need it. I personally wouldn't buy this camera, but I also wouldn't buy a fs700... I'm just saying the new z100 will target a larger market than the fs700 did, plus the price makes it hard to beat given its specs.

I'm just excited more affordable 4K options are coming. It means 4K implementation will transition faster and 4K broadcast will move in a more rapid pace vs. when RED and F65 material was the only 4K material we had. Wider adoption benefits us all and will help sell RED cameras to clients looking for higher quality 4K material.

Zackly. This is going to impact the FS700 market segment. The next question is, what else does Sony have in the pipeline. Perhaps a tweener for the F5 and F55, at IBC?

Thank you very much

The aliasing artifacts on the red channel look like shit. ...It's like DV25/50 all over again. Ugh.

I'm looking forward to having a B4 2/3" 4K camera, too many gigs are not right for 35mm DOF but still want 4k.

Exactly. Pulling wild focus with shallow DOF on a run and gun reality or doc situation sucks balls.

does the fs700 have peaking? I use it all the time on the EX1 which means i almost always shoot at f1.9 through even the F55 had peaking but i didn't get to demo it thoroughly enough to see if i could get away with operating minus a focus puller.

EX1 is a 1/2" sensor, so shallow depth of field isn't as big of a deal as it is in s35 or full frame. Sure peaking helps, but try running around, framing, and pulling focus all at once on a reality gig. Smaller sensors help in this arena.

I didn't say it would be easy, just easier than pulling focus by eye using the monitor, digital rev shoots with dslr run and gun so its not impossible and they dont even have peaking.

Some footage from the 'consumer' version of this has been posted to Vimeo at UHD downloadable resolution. I must say it looks good for a run and gun camera.
The download of the UHD is 2.7 gigabytes. Included some dim light shots. I think it looks nice, can't wait for the 500 megabit 422/ 10 bit deep samples to show up.

EDIT: looks like the UHD version is now gone.
