Hey Guys,

Just received the New DP6 SDI from SmallHD for use as a focus puller monitor on the Red and as a occasional 5d/7d monitor. I had the DP1x which I could have loved but had it's issues and challenges which led me to returning it and waiting several months for the DP6. I now have this unit in my hands and my initial impressions are very favorable!!!

I will give you a short and sweet review soon.

Cheers,
Prio

Expecting mine in a view days, is there less light coming from the small HD than the red lcd?

Got mine too!

It's well built, image looks ok. Sdi works fine, and HDMI works fine out of my 5d But I haven't got HDMI from the red to work with it (yes all the proper menu items were selected). I'm hoping for some firmware revision to fix it.

Hi All!

May I know can it show Red One' Metadata Stream on the monitor? Billion thanks

Cheers

Why don't you use de SDI in?

does the HDSDI also do HDMI or is it an either/or situation?

Standard i/o is- HDMI, component & composite
Optional i/o- adds HD-SDI to the above.

I believe it can be powered by a very wide range of voltages... 5-18v. I have mine powered off the Red battery via battery plate outlet and SmallHD cable. They also have thier battery packs as well as a dual Canon 5d/7d battery plate.

So far I am lovin it!!!

How is it powered?

I originally purchased the DP1x for use on a month long gig on a 5d & 7d... I initially loved the size and loved the build but immediately had issues with the functionality on the 5d. It was not the fault of the DP1x but that of the 5d. However, struggling with the rear controls, the size turning out to be to big for DSLR use, weird scaling with the Red and funky blacks I opted to return it and wait for the DP6. At the time there were very little options in the price range and due to the excellent customer service I had confidence that SmallHD would deliver.

Note- I have always loved the 5.6 on the Red and have never really used the EVF or wanted a 7". I love the portability of the Red's small monitor as well as the DP6. The image quality is stunning and having SDI & HDMI in one unit is great even though I wont shoot 5d anymore.

I am putting the DP6 thru it's paces and hope to give you some conclusions soon.

Cheers,
Prio

One thing I can tell you right now-

Build is sick
mounts all the way around
hdmi or sdi from the Red is solid
Menu system is great!!!
Image flip
Menu flip
Accessories are well thought out and very functional!!! even the funky sunshade.

Acrylic cover... fitment & protection is great but is a bit reflective.

So, guys. I have my own DP1, about a week.
+s.
Very lightweight. For metal case - VERY lightweight.
Batteries also very lightweight. Lasts about 2-2.5 hour per battery
Case is as weatherprof as it can be. Almost hole case is made from one metal brick, only connectors side and panel side not so hermetic. (I thinks so until disassemble it).
Almost good:-) sunhood
Minuses - a lot:-(. Nobody said that it is a professioinal device, but it looks like.
So, -s:
Case contains some holes in the case, which are not visible until i disassemble a case.
Sunhood, due it's construction almost always touch the screen.
Battery are unpredictable, battery status have only one light, i mean only one indicator - green/red/yellow. I've sharge the battery put it on the monitor - not working. Putting it back - red led.... Before it was green, 5 min ago.
Neither battery nor monitor doesn't have any infos about a power - so, you cannot predict next 5 min monitor will turned of. IT IS NOT GOOD - especially if you are shooting live action like children or animals. This unit costs almost a half of price a body of a 5d, so it is not a cheap toy....
Connectors are completely shit. Fucking shit. Once again - nobody said that it is a professional device - but pastic video connectors for analog input - it is stupid decision. They have A HUGE lots of space to put BNC's, but they didn't. It's causing that heavy construction cable+bnc+bncf+RCA-m broke the earth inside a case. Of course, it's happened on the set, and takes an hour to fix it.
So, i opened a case. By the way, it was surprisingly easy - just pull the plastic canvas of the screen. Loosen screws, some kind of glue over the board. The video connector was just cutted by the scissors from the block of the connectors. It is shit inside. Wires not fixed, connectors are not marked, on of the connectors (6 pin) sits in the 10 pins bed, and no marks which pin are first.
The unit does not remind the settings at least for the analog input (size at least), when you change a battery. Stupid, i think.
I cannot find any infos about battery type. So, i cannot predict battery workflow in cold weather, for example. It seems the it is not LiIon, but who nows....
Battery grip is not rock solid, and can loose a battery during active action or after good shaking od impact. Also need t o be fixed.

So, my total amount is: good device, good design, but a LOT's of things to be changed. Unfortunately.

DP1 is the old version. The DP6 which is what this thread is about is the newer and improved version.
