I'm not sure if the Scarlet "interchangable" is still coming ... but as I've been researching lenses lately, one of the things that struck me is that there are some AWESOME lenses for the Micro 4/3 cameras ...

First among them are the Leica M lenses (easily adapted to 4/3), and then the super fast Voigtlanders (25mm/.95, 35mm/1.2, 50mm/1.1), etc.

So if I were in Red's shoes, I keep the fixed Scarlet at 2/3 ... but why not make the interchangeable Scarlet a 4/3 sensor??? You keep all the specs the same (3k, etc), and come in around $5-6,000 for the brain. Do that you will CRUSH Panasonic and the coming DSLR updates from Canon and Nikon.

Is it really that much work to switch to a slightly larger sensor? Because it seems like that's the biggest and really the only gripe people have with the Scarlet fixed. Yet, judging from the early reception of the AF100 and the Lumix GH2 -- people are very comfortable and excited about great 4/3 performers .......

Anyway, these are just my thoughts and I know Red knows best :-) i'm be curious to know what anyone else thinks about this :001_huh:

I think part of the issue with 2/3 sensor is not just depth of field limitations -- but also having fast lens options at wider angles. For instance, even at 4/3 -- you can get fast apertures at 21mm and 25mm. The Leica Summilux-M is 1.4 ($6000!) and the Voigtlander 25mm is .95. However, when you factor in the crop -- these lenses equate to 42mm and 50mm in full frame.

In other words, it's tough to find something really fast on 4/3 that translates into a 21-35mm FOV (relative to full frame) -- and it's that much tougher on a 2/3 camera.

At the end of the day, I also just think having the interchangeable Scarlet as 4/3 will just plain help Red sell more cameras .......

It's a good idea, but not a simple one, I imagine.

Firstly, a new sensor will need to be created, tested, approved... then the boards will have to be completely changed to deal with the 3/4x (?) more data, then tested, approved... the mini primes will either have to be scrapped or redesigned, tested, approved.

I also think, to become a 4/3 standard and be able to use all those lenses... don't you need to join the 4/3 system along with Pana/Olympus? Who knows how that works?

All in all, nice idea... but I think, very difficult to do any time soon. Maybe Scarlet 2?

This has been talked about since the Q4 '08 announcements over on Scarletuser. There is however plenty of 16mm cine glass out there (new and old) some nice fast glass too. There is more 16mm cine housed glass than 4/3 available although having a 4/3 sensor depending on the mount there would be no reason why u couldn't mount 16mm glass with some cropping.

4/3 is a nice happy medium with DOF it is true. People have been talking about it since the beginning and it hasnt changed so unlikely to change now. Of course though then there was a Scarlet S35 which us now Epic lite. But like Jim Retar said they would likely have to buy into the format.

Additionally though it appears to me that for people looking to buy the Scarlet they are likely to find that they, if they don't already own one, have to buy a HDSLR just because of the demand for shallow DOF. Especially with music videos and small Indie films.

Personally I find it all a bit ridiculous and only really like shallow DOF in close ups. I lean far more to deep focus photography by choice but it really depends on what the story is saying to you.

Maybe they could use the 5K sensor they already have, but only use the 3K crop area of the sensor, which would be roughly 4/3 i guess... this way they could maybe use it with Scarlet's 3K capable hardware, or even lower if the frame rate is restricted. And they could maybe make use of B-quality sensor chips that didn't pass quality control, if the errors were in the non-active area.

And callit Epic-E, for "economy".

Unlikely, i know ;-)

Did anybody say 3k raw? Why this fixating on chip size? I will not go down the big chip crappy codecs road. But than again it depeneds of what youre planning to do with the camera. If youre not planning to do heavy posts you could probely settle with something lighter. I sure scarlet 2/3 will outpreform AF100 by far.

Don't get me wrong. I think AF100 is probely a really good camera with a fast workflow for editing with small file sizes. Why did panasonic leave out dvcpro hd on this camera??

Another doable scenario for a future Scarlet would be a full super 16mm sized sensor on the same 3.3 micron fab as the 2/3". It could support Quad HD resolution, 3840 x 2160. There is excellent S16 glass out there, though pricey.

Anthony, Leica makes a 4/3 format version of the Summilux f1.4 too. It is only $800.

I've just got new Panasonic GH2 and wish that Scarlet Interchangeable will be such light and innovative like this little camera.

That means more or less everything like GH2 but with much better codec (REDCODE) and image quality (3K), new colour science, etc,...

I wish all for upcoming Scarlet.

I consider 2/3 a great format for both fiction works and documentaries. You can obtain shallow focus effects too, if you really need them in some situations. But the most impressive feature of the Scarlet is the 3k resolution raw, in my opinion. I still can't believe we could have 3k raw in a so light, versatile (and affordable) camera. Images from Scarlet will be fantastic on a big screen. I don't need 4/3 if Red can give me a tool like this one.

AnthonyFlores@ i love your idea but RED may take another 10 years to make one that cam that can do that so i rather wait to see if they can even make a 2/3 fixed lens ready for the public. lol Sorry but i am losing hope in RED as a Company

This seems a bit pessimistic. Red takes two years to develop an entirely new camera line from scratch like none that has ever existed before while standing the professional production industry on its head with Red 1 and people think that nothing is happening.
Epics and Scarlets have been finalized for production according to Jim, and it is now down to setting up the assembly lines.
Shouldn't be too many more months.

he's fun to play with, I PM'd him and his reply was very interesting to say the least.

he actually thinks insults at red and my work will get me upset, honestly couldn't care less no one thinks less of me than myself.

edit: I take it back he replied back politely there is hope

WOW what is it with "James Will" wait like the rest of Us and you will be shooting in No time, Really you will. I love to have one at this moment shooting family on the Holidays but just wait Grasshopper. I really do think that is a great idea for the 4/3 sensor ii may give a little more DOF. I do believe DOF is important. I wish Red hear the people on this one.

How do we get that Idea to red; the interchangeable Scarlet as 4/3 sensor ?

james, at this very moment I'm looking at the nifty brochure I picked up at RED's NAB booth in 2008, touting a Scarlet which bears almost no resemblance to the one they're actually going to be making. It says "Early 2009."

Of course, right below that, it also says "specifications, delivery dates and design are subject to change ... count on it."

Of all the things people bitch at RED about, I think missed best-guess-non-promissory-don't-hold-me-to-that-fingers-crossed delivery dates are the most boring and unproductive. Yeah, it's coming out. Yeah, it's late. Yeah, we wish it would come faster. So does RED. So what's yer point?

Amen to that, brother.

lol wow I think he would at least know the people here are serious about this Camera. He dont know the hope it give up and coming directors to know they can shoot at a cinema resolution... James man please realize this art is life and people live it.

By the way, the latest I've heard is that Scarlet 2/3" Fixed and Interchangeable are still planned and in development.

Yeah at RED community day Ted said he had a fixed Scarlet camera sitting upstairs. We will see it in action soon.
