Now time for renew REDONE-MX. I love my Epic-X #326, but I still love Redone-MX so much. The Redone is such a complete camera and so easy to operate and the camera is super reliable.
Once Stage 3 starts, we expect Redone's price drops, I don't want my Redone become second rated and inferior to Epic-X, Epic-S and Scarlet.
My complaint here, the Redone's boot up time is slow compared to Epic-M/X, and weight is heavy.
If Red Digital Cinema Company is serious about improving existing Redone, they must redesign inside motherboard and circuit to fast rebooting speed and use light weight material.
I hope that some of Red employer will read this.

Thanks

Chosei

I think you are right about the R1 Chosei. The improvement is called Epic. If you start with the R1, make the boot time faster, make the camera lighter, and throw in a bunch of other improvements, you don't have an R1 anymore, you have an Epic.

We did re-design the RED One to be lighter and boot faster - it's called the Epic. And then we offered fantastic upgrade programmes.

Graeme, Are you saying that there is no more upgrade for existing REDONE anymore and discontinue the REDONE production?

Chosei, the amazing thing about R1 is that it's been around 4 years and is still a relevant camera today. In a world where most technology moves at such a rapid pace, I'd say we've got our money's worth with R1. Other than the shortcomings you mentioned, it's still viable right?

I am saying precisely what I said - no more, no less.

Most of professional digital camera's life spans are 7 years, it's not about money.
I love the design of the Redone and reliability and still make beautiful picture.
If internal design makes impossible to improve, that's it. I'll give up. But I'll keep my Redone on my bookshelf until I die.

I agree with Chosei and would like to add that I don't really appreciate that there is not a new FW update for our R1 for so long since there are so many things to improve yet. And just to name a few...

1) The huge RED logo in the middle of the frame while the camera is booting up thus not allowing us to use it for framing and rehearsing shots.
2) Random Lock Ups and codec errors (Very rare but still there)
3) The promised faster sensor read-reset times for our MXed REDs never happened.

My Epic-X is arriving this week but that doesn't mean that my RED1 will have to go on the shelve. I believe that support for it has to continue.

Point taken, I wish you guys re-produce or re-issue newly re-wired Redone someday.
And 40years from now, some old man would say "that's my first camera...I shot my first feature, is this antique? " and young movie maker says "No, it's re-issued RedOne, it's like Leica M's."

That, and here is too much to do looking forward, to spend much time going back.

Jim Jannard has stated that RED will continue to support the R1 for some time (though nobody knows how long that is). But heres an idea: How about opening up the camera software/firmware for third parties to fool around with (read: improve & further develop) after RED has discontinued their support for it. That would be in every R1 owner's best interest. Or charge a fee for firmware upgrades to allow for further development?

Maybe Red 1 will become the Mitchell Standard of the digital cinema era. Can't kill it, be around for decades.
