  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New REDMAG Pricing

We aren't complaining...I think most Scarlet owners appreciate the upgrade, but we have to wait another 3 months...that's what Jarred is stating.

I wonder how you Epic folks would feel if Jarred would say:

"Looks like we are going to be able to turn the Turbo 512GB cards into 632GB cards and we are going to keep the price the same. But to do so.. we still need to wait till Murphy's law kicks in as the memory companies flip into the next quarter.

Turbo 632GB cards shipping September 28th.

Happy now?

I bet you folks wouldn't be too happy either. Love to see that.

I'm glad all you Epic folks that can afford Turbo cards are thrilled. Yeah for you, but for us Scarlet folks, I personally would like to have 32gb cards for now like you promoted at NAB. So, what happened during the 32gb cards testing for three months. They didn't preform well? They didn't work. What's with the change?

and for the record, if you gave me a mountain of 32gb gold, I'm already there! I've been waiting for the past three months on top with my Scarlet cam ready to roll much like you Epic users would be up there waiting for your Turbo cards.

My two cents...

it is very apparent you don't know anything about red history. A lot of people with Epics waited years for their camera.

oh I'm sorry to hear that. Just curious, why didn't you go stage II epic then?

@Anthony:

The store has been temporarily out of stock on the 512gb version for a little while now. I could be wrong, but I think the question is when will they be available again in the store? That is my question at least.

I might be off in my estimation here but...

The Atomos Ninja 2 uses 2.5" SSDs and it's pretty small. In my mind it feels like 2.5" SSDs ought to fit (in a new side module) on the side of an Epic or Scarlet. Am I wrong in that assumption?

If not, what is the reason for staying with 1.8" all this time? 2.5" seems like a much larger market with sizes and prices dropping every day. Speeds are good too.

I can also only assume all things have been considered and that there is a perfectly good explaination. The answer might also be known to many.

Anyone care to enlighten me?

A lot of people don;t seem to realize that hand-picking SSDs for on-cam use is different from buying them in bulk and just putting any old unit in your computer. If you computer hick-ups, no big deal. If you camera hick-ups = lost shot.

It's easy to understand that handpicking components is more expensive than buying bulk. I would turn it around and say: what people fail to see is that it isn't necessary to handpick.

If RED chooses to test memory before shipping, it will certainly put them in a good position, but there are no guarantees. Media can fail at any time.

Off the shelf drives are used to capture shots every day around the world. Needless to say: buying a reputable brand and checking the media prior to commercial shoots makes sense.

I'm all for a RED series of memory cards that are PRO. Those who need that can pay for it (or rather forward costs to clients). But the RED system is supposed to be modular, remember? The SSD module is separate. It's an excellent opportunity to make a new SSD module with a 2.5" sled that users can fill with own drives. Who here wouldn't like that option?

And by the way: I don't think that you can say that data loss is in any way less traumatic than loss of footage. Identical backup principles apply to both sides.

PS. This discussion is unrelated to lower REDMAG prices, which is great. Good on RED for letting customers profit from new, better conditions.

I think it's two things.

1. It would mean putting aside the development of other things red has cooking.

2. People would fuck up using cheaper memory and complain and give red a bad rep.

I think a separate battery-powered transfer device that accepts redmags and hardrives and ssds would be a much better option.

Have to agree with alex...
If any part of the Red system fails I can contact Red themselves and they will sort it. There are no cross compatibility issues that need sorting.. This in turn allows innovation to happen faster..

You just need to look over at BMCC and even Atomos to see SSD compatibility issues. My Ninja 1 only works well with certain HDDs let alone SDDs... Never had an issue with any RedMags..

You can't buy a Ferrari and then ask to put a Hybrid engine in it on days where you are commuting to work.

Buy the right tool for the job. If RED isn't it, that's fine, nobody is forcing you to buy this system. There are plenty of third party 1080p recorders for when you need to downscale your footage as you shoot.

Nothing to see here, move along please.

Since I have 3 copies of everything, data loss would not be traumatic. Besides, when I say hiccup, I don't mean data loss, I mean the event where copy speed pauses for a second or two, then continues for reasons unknown. In this case, I have only lost 2 seconds of my time. But Red is not copying off another drive that can wait, they are copying off a live sensor data stream that only has so much buffer.

i have never, ever heard of a Red SSD failing in-camera. That's something. The SSDs in my computer do any number of odd things.
