  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

new REDCINE-X feedback

A couple of requests/bugs (using build 158):

I find that the Lift Gamma Gain controls are too sensitive making it difficult to finesse a shot. Would it be possible to either limit or give the user to ability to adjust the sensitivity?

The batch window should display the total time remaining.

Look presets should be saved with each .rcx project rather than being global. Or at least give the user that option.

We don't have a Red Rocket card yet (I'm pushing for one), but is it still true when running RC-X with RR that Full debayer quality is the only option? I understand the desire to keep the footage as pristine as possible by making the most of the info there, but when making HD dailies for offline, I set debayer to 1/2 Good and even our most discerning editor is pleased with the image quality. If there's a significant speed increase to be had by making the lower debayer settings available, then please do so. When it comes time for final color grading, we work natively off the R3D files, except for M-X footage, in which case we do do a full quality debayer to DPX for our Baselight.

After applying a Look Preset to a shot in the timeline, if I play into the next shot, stop then attempt to apply another Look, the settings in Image and Lift Gamma Gain get updated, but the Look doesn't actually get applied to the image. I need to go back to the previous shot, the either drag the cursor to the next shot or use the 'next shot' button in the transport controls for the Look to be applied.

I haven't been able to successfully open a saved RC-X project. The timeline always opens up empty.

Other than that, it's a great app. Keep up the good work guys!

Got it. But I don't think that would get you a round trip back into an editor or vfx except for a simple cuts only linear sequence.

There might be a nice way to round trip the filenames but need to think on it more...

It'd be nice to have as you said "except for a simple cuts only linear sequence" option. I recently had a job where this would have come very much in handy.

I'm still not getting optimal color saturation out of Red Cine X even with build 183. Here's the results that I'm getting with the latest version compared to Apple's Color.

Getting stuttering playback on build 183.....using RR card. Was not like this on previous build-in my case. I let it buffer, and can see the buffering. As l let it get ahead, it still plays back in a stuttering effect. At 1/2 res.

Using Radeon 4870 card and RR card in slot 2

Love Redcine-X, only one problem for me, a 256mb ATI card that Redcine-X often tells me isn't enough to view full-res preview. I have 4gig of ram too.

I think the red clip bar at the end of the histogram could be bigger (cover more range), but better than running it horizontally along the bottom of the histogram, I'd love a numerically displayed value "% pixel clip" (so we know exactly how many pixels are clipping)?

I have been playing with the sample files (Mercedes & London) and I quite love what RX can do with the files. the issue I have is I can't export. No way, no how... It locks the program every time (and it doesn't seem to matter if I'm trying to export QT or Avid, etc and it did so for both builds 104 and 183):

My system is a Dell 7400 64 bit (currently vista) with two Xeon 3ghz proc, with 12 GB ram, nVidia FX570 and more HDD storage than I can shake a stick at... so I know the box can handle this...

I am not currently a R1 owner, however am considering it, so need to check over workflows etc, since I want to understand how this works before I go and shoot something I can't finish (on that note I can't seem to get the Adobe/Red importer to work in CS4 either... sigh... it too crashes CS4 using these same sample clips).

1st real shot at RedCine-X

1st real shot at RedCine-X

These probs's may have been covered, but I don't have all day to search at the moment...

Upgraded to Build 30 last week to try to overcome a time-code Jam sync problem with Pro-tools (didn't help. but thats another story).
Everything appeared to be OK on-camera otherwise.

Shot some voice talent all day yesterday 2k 16:9 rc36, with visual time-code on a monitor in shot so I can reset the t/c to be correct to the Pro-tools session, as I've been doing in RedCine.
I generate ref qt's with burn-in info for artists to use.

Windows XP64 Pro box, Intel Xeon Quad core, 8 Gb ram, NVidia Quadro FX 1700

Opened the first of 100+Gb of clips in RedCine under my old project settings thats worked fine on older builds..... thats no good... bright colour splotches everywhere.
Opened same clip in RedCine-X... image is OK, but need to get used to the new toolset...

Problem 1. No audio on playback in RC-X. Audio is NOT muted, just getting nothing (Its there on the clip for certain).
Problem 2. I can't find any way to reset the time-code values to match the monitor the way I could in RedCine...!!!! huge problem...
Problem 3. I generate a test H.264 qt, result is I have audio on the QT, but image is BLACK.
Problem 4. Try to generate an MjpegA to test, RC-X crashes each time I try it.
Problem 5. I can't "Save a project" or "Save a project as"... no window appears, so each time it crashes I have a full reset of the controls to do....

Question.. is RC-X acting the same on a Mac as it is on Windows?

edit: a high-end Mac is giving the same results with H264 and Mjpeg4 qt's... black frames only with audio....

Is Red-Rushes on a Mac still a viable alternative for generating QT's on Build 30?

edit: Redrushes works, but veeeeeery slow.... trying Clipfinder 2.2.....

Clipfinder 2.2 working! thank heavens...

also.. revisited RedCine-X on my PC... now I seem to be able to generate the qt's OK that I couldn't before, no black frames, howevers till can't "save" the project settings...

...reaaally wish Redcine handled build 30... looks like I'll have to roll back a build...

Audio playback is not enabled yet as per the release notes.
The code is there but one of the windows libraries we use is problematic.

Send us the log files for the black frames.
It sounds like it might be a quicktime version problem if nothing is getting encoded. Can you try updating or reinstalling quicktime?

I've got a bug on both PC and Mac versions of build 187 where selecting Full size and then selecting Fit Both or any other Fit W/H option doesn't re-centre the picture. Rather, it ends up out of the viewing frame entirely.

Another bug has crept back in as well, regarding white balance selection going to 1700K instead of true white.

This is all tested using build 30.4.9 footage shot 4.5K at 23.98fps.

Cheers,

Paul

It's always been this way. Double click the viewer to re-centre. But I agree it should do that automatically.

Thanks Nick, that did the trick nicely! Yes, it should (and no doubt will) be done automatically in a future build.

Cheers from Tokyo,

Paul

Suffering from the same issue. Paul, if you click cancel though, the clip seems to remain in tact most of the time.

yes, I did notice that too... although I can't seem to export any Avid files... Quicktime, yes, Avid no... gets to about 99%, stalls and 'eventually' goes to 100 but no file can be found at the saved location.

just playing with build 194 - what appears to be a minor issue: the viewer window remains on top of all other windows when I switch applications (mac pro). The other windows seem to drop behind as they should.

Snapshot settings

Snapshot settings

Deanan: A funny request i think?

On the snapshot settings.....the current options for Quality are:
1. Full Res
2. Half Res

* Is it possible to have a slider to allow for much lower res snapshots for emailing or web? I love the quality of the snapshots, but 99.9% of my snapshots are used to email a snapshot and then require me to go into photoshop EVERY time to lower the res to get an acceptible file size.

Thanks!

We're adding more control... think export presets :)
