I heard a little bit of gossip that Angenieux may be releasing something for Red in the not to distant future with a pricepoint aimed at the buyers market, how much that is remains to be seen. Expect more info at NAB no doubt. Nevertheless it's good to see one of the big boys of lens manufacturer tackling lower priced but quality lenses and it'll be interesting to see what the guys in France come up with for the Red... Or should I say Rouge!

you are right Paul - and it seems they are quite ready with the lens - hopefully to show them at NAB.

Probally a rehash of their still camera zooms like they use to sell for Leica mount and such. Or it could be something brand new . lol

It's a brand new lens as far as I know Chuck, I have a feeling that if they get it right there will be a lot of buyers, and probably not just from RedUsers either.

Very interesting. Anyone have any facts?

Hi Paul

What would get it right mean? Is it just price? Or a we talking about features (encoders on focus, FL and iris etc) as well?

regards

Michael

havig many many many angenieux optics here, i only can recommend them.
their only real problem was: they were pretty expensive.

i have been told since 2006/7 that angenieux is building a complete new mfg plant in order to keep up with the demand for their lenses.

if someone wants to get the good french glass, preferred by directors as kubrick and good enough for stuff as "barry lyndon" since the 80ties, a 4K testride, feel free to contact us.
we have been pretty surprised how excellent their lenses perform on red.

angenieux offers 11-800mm 40x zooms, zooms with f1.xx, ultra lightweight zooms, maximum qualiyt zooms... most of them with remote, aif, digital compensation, extenders etc as options... so i suppose they must be aiming at price, as in any other regard, i wouldnt know what they would add.

btw: canon, cooke, fujinon or zeiss, arrri or sigma: all built their zooms basing on the classic 56/58 angenieux patented design.

Have you compared them to the new Master Zoom? I have heard that this is the only lens that can actually resolve the resolution of 4K...

Haven't tested myself...and just so I don't get your back up...I use the the Optimo's all the time (except when I use primes...then it's Cooke S4's).

Essentially what we are talking about is a baby optimo zoom I believe. By "Get it right" I mean that if they are truly aiming at the Red Market it will need to have a reasonable price point compared to their traditional market prices. In order to do so the manufacturing tolerances will likely have to be lower than typical with a mind to keeping the manufacturing costs lower. This might be a case similar to Zeiss still lenses whereby the glass is finished in the far east etc. Therefore by get it right I mean that you get say 95% of the ang quality for a lower pricepoint whilst not harming sales of their normal optimos.

As for facts all I know of is a zoom, and I believe a short zoom most likely something like the 18-50 region and I believe it's T2.8.

Paul

while angenieuxs "top-quality, top-price" approach was problematic for 2/3 lenses (fujinon and canon sold quite more lenses for much lower prices), i think angenieux might have a hit with redusers if they offer a lower-priced version of the 25HR.

On the other hand, they are pretty sold out with their cinelenses, so unless their new mfg plang gives lots of new headroom, they dont have an incentive to offer lower prices lenses.

30MM to 80MM?

For me, the value of a zoom is working quickly without changing primes and having a zoom range that covers the great majority of shots. That pretty much knocks this lens out of the running for me because I do a lot of work at the wide end.

I guess it depends on your shooting style; for some 30MM might be dandy.

I'll stick with the 18-100 Cooke; T3 isn't that much slower than 2.8.

Now if Angenieux shows some Red-ballpark-priced primes, I'll be doing more than just taking notice!

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo
