  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

new RED Pro Program...

18mm T1.8 (to match the set) will follow the first five lenses a few short months after delivery begins. Other lenses, including 14/15mm are in design.

Jim

So, It's almost a year after this post - has anyone received a lens package yet? Actually curious about the glass. I saw that Cooke was offering a "red lens set." Is cooke manufacturing these lenses for red? or who?

I've heard mixed reviews about the 18-40mm, and I'm on a bit of a budget.

I mean no disrespect, but I'd like to know what the glass is like before I shell out the dough.

Thanks to anyone who has gotten them and lets me know.

Chris.

Ummm... a year or a week? That post you refer to was dated 3/29/09. And the only RED Pro glass that can be ordered at the moment are the 18-85 zoom and the 300mm prime.

Just like KODAK announcing 120 size

Just like KODAK announcing 120 size

Saw Ansel Adams' 8 X 10 view camera in a show once. Imagine the pixel content of one of his raw files, er i mean negatives.

I'm still scanning my 8X10 negs from "those days". After emigrating from Scotland to Canada I became obsessed with fine art photography. I was passing through California on a mind blowing trip of the States when I stopped into a gas station in Carmel (to make a long story short) the guy at the next pump turned out to be Ansel Adam's lawyer- Bob Byers- a fine photographer in his own right- he was taking part in an Adam's workshop and invited me along- I spent the weekend at his place and was surrounded by people like Ansel Adams, Brett Weston, Morley Baer, Allan Ross (Adams's darkroom tech at the time) It was Nirvana. I had samples of my work with me and Bob presented them to Adams and Weston etc.. I still have the images I bought and traded mine for- all because I stopped into a gas station. Adams talked about his vision of the future of photography (this was about 1980) he more or less described today's digital scene. I'm still scanning my old 8X10 negs but all my exhibition prints these days are digital from beginning to end. After thirty years of using alternative printmaking methods like Platinum, Palladium, Gum Bichromate, Van Dyke, Cyanotype, etc.: (digital) pigment inks on art paper produce one of the most beautifully expressive means of printmaking ever. I've been pumped about the possibilities of digital cinema acquisition for almost as long.

Nice story Bill. I looked at your site, exquisite photography.

I spent five weeks filming on Vancouver Island a couple of years ago, such a beautiful place, it must give you lots of inspiration.

Oops.

Oops.

hm?---its roughly 20 days ago

Yeah. So I'm a moron. Sorry spotted the "joined date" instead of the posted date. Was up for 36 hours before posting.

WARNING: sleep first. ask questions second.

And Yes, Todd. I know the "RED pro" is only out in the 300 and 18-85. Once again I was referencing the 18-50 (was wrong with the 18-40 - once again, sleep deprivation).

But, just because someone says "pro" doesn't mean it's really good glass. I've seen some really poorly made lenses that market themselves as PRO.

And, please, no one take that as an accusation. I just don't have access to the RED lenses to test them. Tend to be getting lenses from local rental houses until I can afford a set.

Just looking for all the information I can get.

Thanks Liam.
Vancouver Island is indeed a great place for inspiration. My work has changed quite a bit since the black and white images were put up on the web site. I'm about to post a new color portfolio (somewhat inspired by my growing interest in abstract expressionism and its figurative precursors) in preparation for upcoming exhibitions. I'm quite excited about this. Liam, what were you filming on the Island?

And Mr Nattress, I'll give you a heads up when the dates have been confirmed for WallSpace Gallery in Ottawa , but it's looking like May 10th for the opening. It would be fantastic if you could make it. And anyone else here who happens to be in that neck of the woods.

Since this was the RED Pro Program thread, I assumed you wanted to know about the Pro lenses... in which case take a look at THIS THREAD started by Mark Pederson.

As to the 18-50 I don't have personal experience with it but I'm sure a search would bring up some threads that speak to it's qualities.

We are anxious to demonstrate how our 18-85mm Pro zoom stacks up to the competition. We are also very excited to show how all our RED Pro Primes do. We can't wait to see how the new "other" lenses perform on the lens projector. We believe that every new option that our customers have at different price points is a good thing.

As far as the 18-50 goes, sure, not perfect. However it has been used exclusively on award winning projects. It's incredibly compact and great for hand held. Having a lens like that in your kit can keep the day moving quick. Its close focus ability is an awesome feature, and also the main reason I don't plan on selling it. Plus there are plenty of sets out there where people won't complain about it, and I'm sure plenty that will. That said I would trade anyone out there for a set of speeds. :)

Looking forward to the primes. Sure do wish they were selling individually off the bat though.

HI, JIm. Im from India.I,ve read a couple of threads in this forum about the Red on hanging or showing blue screen error. I've also heard a few reports here in India about this problem. What is causing this problem? Are you working on it? I would like to hear from you on this.
Regards,

Binu
