  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

new RED Pro Program...

After some reflection I don't think that RED should first (in the next 1-2 years) produce an 18mm lens. Especially if you don't intend to make many more. Rather make a 15mm T1.9 or a 12-21mm T~2.2 zoom which would present a good start and is easier to manufacture for perfection than larger zooms. The extreme wide angles like the Arri 10mm are really kool but hard to design with high performance AND a small price in mind. An 18mm just isn't wide enough for some cases, yet the 15mm wouldn't be too extreme regarding distortion etc.!

So a 15mm or a 12-21mm zoom would add just fine to bread&butter business of most of us.

My 5 cents on other focal lengths .... aside from the obvious wides, a 20\21(great for aerials), 28 and 135

My perfect set:

10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 18mm, 25mm, 35mm, 40mm, 50mm, 85mm, 100mm, 135mm, 300mm

I would also like a

RED ZOOM 100-600mm with optical VR

a 2x extender

and one 8mm rectilinear

Jim, Jarred and gang....very pleased with what I am seeing/hearing. I would also push the 18 dev over the 21. Best of luck getting these out the door, when will you start taking orders again?

Okay ... I am officially ULTRA, UBER FREEKIN' EXCITED!

VERY, very happy I ordered 4 sets of these a very long time ago.

Counting the seconds ...

My starter set

My starter set

Jim.. Since I will be starting with the 5 lens set, and it will be a while before I could afford more, here would be my choice for this set:

Wide: 10mm-18mm (Whatever works for you to build in that range, the wider the better)
Workhorse I : 24mm
Workhourse II: 50 mm
Long I: 85mm
Longer II: 150mm

This would be my $20k starter set which would get me to most things I need (Except the major long 300mm, but I'd pick that up later.

Of course there are other focal lenghts out there I'd like to have, but this would do me fine to start, and I'd add to it over time. I hope others will agree, as this is the set I'd like to start with.

Really would like a 12 or 10 for underwater

Really would like a 12 or 10 for underwater

What other focal lengths would you like to see? We are considering a 14mm and a 21mm. Thoughts?

Jim

Really would like a 12 or 10 for underwater. 14 is okay but equivalent to what we were shooting video with in the eighties. Modern hd wideangles that we shot with over past 6 years BR (before RED) or so were 4.5 so closer to the 10 to 12 range on S35. And there just isn't that much out there for reasonable cost. 10mm UltraPrime is HUGE and older design. 12mm UP is huge also but more modern design. UP 8R is awesome but $30K, and probably don't need to go quite that wide.

A T1.3 12mm about the size of the RED 18-50 (with shade) for about $6K -7K would be nice. (Hey, you asked.)

I think a 10mm, 14mm, and 18mm would be great. Having the 10mm would really be a handy tool for those that want to go a bit overboard! :}

A 10mm is a very difficult/big lens to produce. We don't feel like we can sell enough 10mm lenses to justify the development costs. Better to rent one.

Jim

A 21mm is pretty critical on the shoots I work on. It just feels like the right focal length for a lot of TV commercials.

Any time we try to save money by not getting a 21mm we almost always end up sending someone back to pick one up.

21, 27 and 40mm is what I would like to see added.

Count me in for a 14mm

They will be sold as a set at 1st. All 5 lenses for just under $20K ($4K each). All 6 lenses (add the Pro 300mm) for just under $25K. Later this year we will sell the primes individually for just under $5K each, except the Pro 300mm which is $5950.

Better to buy the set... :-)

Jim

Jim you just made my year. Merci!!

great news :))
I love the 300mm Pro i have and can´t wait to get the Set.
In addition to the anounced focal lenghts (including the 18mm) i´d like to see
(all in T1.9)
14mm, 16mm, 65mm, 135mm as my first priority and
21mm, 27mm, 40mm, 180mm as second priority

Jim,

First let me say "kudos" to RED Team for the great looking prime set to go with the 300 and 18-85. Way, way cool...

Beyond the genres that use primes heavily, as you know, a big segment of the potential market for R1, Epic, and Scarlet shoots in genres which usually require zooms - genres where it isn't practical (or can be dangerous) to walk to each framing or setup. In those genres we use primes when it makes the best sense, but 80% of the time we use zooms out of practicality.

I know I'll be buying selected primes - especially the wides (the wider the better) - 14 would be great - 12 even better. Beyond that though, a set of new S35 zooms would be awesome, maybe 12-21, and 50-300.

I'm also fascinated by the RED Electronic Lenses on the 12/3 announcement, which cover FF35, and when used with the DSMC line showed smart mounts (RED, Canon, Nikon), auto-focus and image stabilization. That 15-25 zoom is especially attractive to me, as are the announced 25-100, and 70-200. I'd really like to see a 10:1 zoom in that line up also - maybe 30-300. A long zoom, 150-400 or 150-600 would also be awesome. Cine zooms are too heavy for their focal lengths to be of much use in the genres I mentioned above - thus we adapt 35mm stills zooms to the task.

Whoever makes FF35 covering 35mm stills zooms, which aren't giant/heavy, have 8:1 or better yet 10:1 zoom ratios, and which have the ergonomics and utility of a B4 2/3 EFP/ENG zoom, will IMO sell tons of those lenses to those who work in the genres I mentioned above. With R1, and Epic and Scarlet to come, there's a big demand for such zooms among those who work in the hybrid cine/EFP and EFP industries.

Any word on when we can expect more word on the RED Electronic Lenses?

Again - kudos on the new S35 prime set - IMO they can be a cine-style industry "game changer" when they (and some wider focal lengths) ship.
