We had hoped to do some testing before a shoot in NY, but we had left and were shooting when the alpha headed our way.

We just returned and even with footage shot with the non-alpha camera SW (Build 18 v3.6.4) we do see a dramatic change in color accuracy in RA... especially the 709 side. We'll conduct more formal tests with the camera SW once our gear arrives with the rest of crew sometime tomorrow AM.

Left image is the old color science, right is the new.

No, they were both shot at 320 and pushed to 1000. Build 18 chose a lower colour temperature which might account for the slight increase in noise.

Red Team, any idea when this new color science will be implemented into Red Line? I would love to get my render farm cooking on some older footage we shot last summer!

Very very soon.

And a followup question: is the new color science going to be able to be used immediately in Adobe Premiere or do they have to do things on their end to implement it?

I'm guessing that this new debayering color science will only affect stuff converted with the new Red Alert and the new Redcine (whenever that comes out), but we will have to wait for the new SDK and new Adobe and Apple plug-ins before we see the improvement in those apps. Is this true?

footage from a year ago

footage from a year ago

Hello all, a year ago we were shooting the first film in Canada to be fully shot on the Red, and during production around day 15 our D camera was accidently set with the "open gate" function turned on. At the time when "open gate" was checked, the camera reported that we were shooting with a 360 degree shutter, but in reality the camera was shooting with a 180 degree shutter. At the time it was devastating that the camera was showing a different shutter angle then what was actually being used. Well we re-shot, and carried on.

Now fast forward to today, and the recent tests being done with the new color science. I went back to the LTOs and pulled a couple of these unusable shots, and wanted to see if using the the new color science would salvage these shots. Well, in my opinion, yes, these shots would be acceptable now. Have a look at the images below...I was blown away to see the results. I have blown these to 2000ISO to get a better picture of the enhancements.

True. Getting the new color propagated to the SDK and other apps quickly is a high priority.

So until the new SDK is applied everywhere it would be best to render from Redalert / Redrushes to ProResHQ with the new colorscience instead of doing a Log and Transfer in Final Cut or a Clipfinder- rendering?

Right?

And on that note: How is Apple Color playing along in the new scenario?
Until the SDK has gone through?

(For an HD-project. No film-out)

All the very best,
Jochen

Jochen

As I understand it, Rushes is a front end for Red Line, and Red Line does not have this optimization yet. So you would need to render straight from RA clip by clip. And Log and Transfer will not work either yet.

Will work with Crimson workflow through Redline i guess...

No, Redline has not had the optimazation done to it yet, only Red Alert v3.72B (which you can render from, just not using RedLine) Red staff please jump in if I'm incorrect.

this is the best example yet. the noise is "noise" in the first pic. but the noise becomes beautiful "texture" in the second. is that how it will handle noise from now on?

And remember it's been pushed to 2000ISO!

Impressive stuff guys. If I wasn't on a feature right now I would have jumped in on the testing. I like what I'm seeing and can't wait to play around with this new approach.
