  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New RED Color Science - Test Pilot Feedback Thread

This absolutely amazing!
Look at the difference between RA! 3.50 (top)
and then RA! 3.72B (bottom)
I left the info on there so you can see they are clearly the same file...

It looks like the new RA makes the trick of exporting first in 5000K and then changing color temperature in the CC app unnecessary, which is very good news.

The noise looks certainly very organic.

When will we able to dl the new RA, since it can really help me with my new short film?

Wow! that IS impressive. This was the best test i have seen until now!

Can't wait for the new RA and RC now!

Interesting if this is the case. This was a technique I recently stumbled on to help improve some low light tungsten footage I recently shot. Changing tungsten shot footage to 5000k for the obvious noise benefits and adjusting the tint and RGB channel settings in Red Alert to compensate for the WB change. The balance was still somewhat off doing this but it was close enough to adjust in color correction.

I'm grateful for RED creating this update. I just finished my last day on a feature and this couldn't have come at a better time. You guys really make our lives easier. Thanks again to RED and the beta testers. Science enabling stories indeed.

Hopefully this will come across in more regular Adobe plugin updates as well? Be a shame to have to go back to RedCine (on a PC) to get the benefits of this....

....which is looking spectacular and has me waiting to go back to a low light tungsten shoot I did recently to see how much better I can bring it out!

Cheers,

Paul

That's my concern and hope as well. If I take R3d's into After Effects for CC it would be good if this could transfer to that platform. Any thoughts on that Graeme?

When this update makes it's way into the SDK, all apps will benefit.

will Color Science be used in some way when color grading in a Scratch system??? Or there is no relation between then??

will this improve green screen shooting ? anybody tested that yet

I lit up the green screen with tungsten after doing the tests and took a quick shot. A compositor had a quick look at the two and said he couldn't really tell the difference in terms of pulling a key. It's strange because the blue channel in the screen looked visibly cleaner to the eye. I can send you the tiffs if you want to check for yourself.

There is certainly a difference in noise. Not as much as if you use a 1/2CTB to correct. Maybe half the effect on noise (very rough guess).

Evin looks like the leader of the stud patrol... :-)

The noise is less (especially in the blue channel) AND the color is much more accurate at different color temperatures (particularly under 4000K)...

...The new camera build only matters for on-set monitoring and the accuracy of white balance in the metadata. Nothing in the new build actually effects the pixels recorded in the RAW. Which also means you can use the new color science on old footage.

This is the exact kind of development that makes me glad I jumped on the Red train early. You guys are image quality freaks. Thanks.

I have a bunch of older tungsten footage I would LOVE to revisit with this new Color Science. That movie is still in post and it would be great to be able to tune those scenes up to look nicer.

Any guess as to when the post tools might get updated?

Maybe I have done something wrong, but I have noticed something strange...

When I was doing the tests, I shot everything on B18 and B17 as I didn't realize that the change (apart from the white balance) was just in Red Alert. I have been comparing noise in the blue channel of the following:
1) B18 with Red Alert 3.72B
2) B18 with Red Alert 3.6

1 looks much better than 2.

However, I just did a third test:
3) B17 with Red Alert 3.6

3 looks the same as 1 (in terms of noise in the blue channel).

Has anyone else compared these two?
