New RED Color Science - Test Pilot Feedback Thread

Graeme, you're the pixies master! Congratulations!

WOW!!!!! Graeme Amazing.

Hoping to see plug-ins in Final Cut, Premiere,RED alert, RED cine, and color grading programs: Soon to take advantage of this amazing new technology!

Now I'm waiting to see what Graeme does about increasing dynamic range.

Still haven't got my camera back to test the new firmware....

But I've pulled up some older footage, under-exposed footage, bad tungsten light stuff. This is great. I'll have to post some "me-too" shots in a bit. This is every bit as significant as Build 16, possibly more.

Has anyone else compared build 18 RA 3.72b with build 17 RA 3.6 yet?

Seeing as this is the difference everyone thinks they are seeing here, it's odd that no one seems to have compared them.

Many of us did - have a look through the thread...

:) Peter

Here is one (same file - identical settings - 3.60 vs 3.72):

THAT IS AWSOME..... GREAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Guten Tag, Herr Fritz!

This is all GREAT ... for how much longer do I have to sit here and SUFFER and watch what the new RA can do with some of my R3D files ? :head_explode:

If anybody did not get the 'power of RAW', this thread should make the penny drop ! Shadow detail is starting to behave as one would expect ... fantastic, another camera changing software release from what I can see (would love to play myself !); the camera build presenting the visible benefits of the latest RA power (I guess).

ETA for RA : for those chomping at the bit ?

Well done Graeme & team ...

I might have missed it but has anyone tried to see how the new red alert etc works with noisy time lapse footage of 1 or1/2 sec exposure ?

Hallo Sanjin !

tut leid, daß ich beim showcase nicht zum händeschüttln gekommen bin.... die bilder sehen fantastisch aus.....

Sanjin, can you post comparisons? Your last shots are nice but they don't showcase what we are discussing here.

Second this one. We all know our RED makes awesome images, what has been really interesting so far are the comparisons.
Liked the macro shots anyway :)
One exception could be a new version of the famous "girl with only candlelight" shot, maybe with your awesome Leica Noctilux-M 50mm f/0.95 ?

...1280 iso would be nice too.

I like to see some underexposed (jam the filter tray/crank the shutter, not stop-down) day exteriors too with specular hits (chrome etc). Any sort of fringe control here for mediocre lenses?
Black sun issue solved for over exposure?

I wrote in Jim's exposure 101 thread,
Processing poorly (subjective) exposed low-light tungsten RAW footage in RC or RA at 3200,
often produces more noise than processing at 5000K and colour correcting.
This should not be the case.
In my opinion, it's caused the most heart ache for new shooters. Its like you under-expose in post; a sort-of blue channel timing issue.
I'd like to know what is going on in the software here. Blue gain obviously, but could a different approach be used? Are there consequences?
If I was shooting "Barry Lyndon" tomorrow (1500-2200K sources for instance), I think I would develop at 5k and CC.
I don't think this should be the case.

What I'm seeing is a complete redress of the issue. I have to eat my words. This is a terrific improvement. Kudos to the brains and hard work behind it.

Roberto,

here I'm more for good things with RED1 just to show a beauty of new and magnificent color science in RA 3.72B.

But now per your request I'll have also something to show as a comparison between RED Alert 3.60 & RA 3.72B @ ISO 2000:

Thanks Sanj,
Great updated test footy.

Interesting colour shift in the streetlights.
Its gone magenta/violet (shorter wavelength)
while the image is overall warmer (longer wavelength).
I guess this makes sense in colour addition.
Candle artifact is gone too.
